The Hound Way

The Hound Way Dog Training and Pack Walking in Wellington, NZ I love helping people understand their dogs and create stronger bonds through play and clear communication.

If you and your dog are struggling with 'problem' behaviours, or you just want to build a good relationship with your dog - I can help. My philosophy in training is that there is no 'one-size-fits-all' way to train a dog - each one is an individual and needs to be treated as such. The end goal is creating a happy and fulfilled dog.

Boofheads first "street walk".

I've been posting a bit of stuff in my "stories" over the last few days about this boy that's on trial with me at the moment. If you've been following along, I mentioned that despite him being in my care for nearly 4 weeks, I still haven't taken him on a walk around my suburb on a short lead.
Why?
Because he sucks at it.... and I don't want him to continue to rehearse that general suckiness.

So tonight, we went out on the flexi leash.... (The local dog lovers Facebook group experts are wincing already 😂).
We spent 90% of the walk being a (controlled and legal) lunatic. And 10% practicing basic obedience skills, and 100% building a good association with the leash that involves 0% dragging me around. 200% GOOD BOY

How did we get here?
Building a communication system (markers for yes and no)
Teaching the fundamentals of what he *should* be doing when he feels leash pressure.
Using these skills to teach: a snappy af recall (not a shake treat bag bribe leveraged on hopes and dreams). Sit & down cues. A "chill" mode. And a heel cue that is coming along pretty nice in new environments for 2 days training.

It's a pretty cool feeling to have a another fresh dog to implement the whole training system I teach to people and have it create a dog that is fun to be around, and doesn't just stomp down all his spicy genetics. It's my goal for every person I work with to get this feeling that I get from taking this dog out for a mission tonight.

Really really hyped to run my Reset Your Relationship boot camp next weekend 🤙🐺👌

A few changes to the packs lately.
We welcomed Teddy the little white cavoodle to the Friday pack.
We welcomed Banjo the fawn hound to the Wednesday pack.
And we said goodbye to Digby who has retired from the Thursday pack.

What happens when you let a "reactive" dog sit in a street facing window to wait for things to bark at?

They practice the behavior.

What happens when we practice things?

We get better at them.

The fortnight in review
10 to 20 Sept 2024
Lots of in home consults this fortnight, including one with Hank the Griffon pictured - such a rad little dog. It's been a busy couple of weeks!

I'm still out here doing in home training consults, I just suck at social media at the moment. I've also moved to the Kapiti Coast - I'm still servicing wellington and the Hutt valley, but it also means I can provide training services for people further north - just ask 🐺

Good morning. Here's a little video I made a while ago to show a client how to use a clicker for "counter conditioning".
It's pretty informal, but I've sent it to a few people now, and thought others might find my way of explaining and showing it helpful.

How to charge a positive reinforcement marker so it has power and meaning to the dog. A brief intro on how to use it to begin counter conditioning for basic ...

Facebook is becoming an absolute burden to get information to people amongst advertising and bots, so i've started a blog on my website for sporadic news updates outside regular photos. Here's a post with a bit of an announcement attached.

Looking forward to starting a fresh pack off!

30 July to 9 August 2024

Big couple of weeks with a couple of new dogs joining the packs after a couple of retirements.

First up Charlie the Pomeranian - don't let the cute face fool you, he's a cheeky little bu**er 😂

Next is May the Greyhound in the Tuesday pack. She's a sweet gentle wee thing that I've been working one on one with over the last few weeks to build her confidence and relationship with me. This week was her first week joining in with the pack and she aced it. Slow and steady 🤙

A lot of the consults I go to, the people have put fantastic foundations on the dog.
The dog knows all the basic obedience. But sometimes they just struggle to put the pieces together and take it from puppy school through to the real world. This may manifest as dog reactivity as it did in Otis the Labradoodle here. With a change in leash handling and some clearer communication from handler to dog, Otis was nailing the ability to see dogs in the street without singing the song of his people (bork bork).

If you want to enjoy hanging out with your dog again, get in touch.
