Part-time Reception and Daycare Attendant

Wellington CBD based, diverse and inclusive workplace looking for reliable dog lovers to join our daycare and reception team!

This position will be 4 days per week, totalling approximately 20 hours, with the possibility of additional shifts and hours if/when needed.

The role involves both customer-facing and dog care duties so previous animal and/or human first aid experience is preferred but not required.

Applicants must:

Be able to work any shifts Monday - Friday.
Be able to commit to working with us long-term.
Be able to cover a shift at short notice.
Be physically fit.
Be reliable and responsible with a great work ethic.
Be able to work in loud environments (hearing protection is provided)
Have confidence and passion for dogs of all sizes.
Have previous experience in dog care/animal handling or a strong desire to learn.
Have great customer service skills.
Have excellent communication skills.

Finer details:
Working with dogs is very hard work, but equally rewarding. We expect professionalism, but also a good sense of humor and a keen attitude when the going gets tough. Being able to read and respect each dog and learn what's important to them is vital to the first step in the dogs connecting and bonding with you.

Our hours of operation are 7am-6:30pm Monday to Friday. The daycare is closed on public holidays and weekends.

Position available - Dog bather

Experience preferred but not essential

We have a part-time position available for a dog bather who will receive on-the-job training with the intention of becoming full-time once training is complete.

Job includes

- Washing dogs
- Drying dogs
- Brushing and/or de-matting dogs
- Cutting dogs nails
- Cleaning up dog urine/faeces
- Cleaning the workspace/room/tools daily
- Booking appointments
- Logging in notes
- Talking with customers about what groom they want and giving information at end of groom
- Need to be confident in handling difficult dogs.

This is a physical job where you will be standing for the majority of your shift, as well as lifting, holding, and moving dogs so the position is best suited to people who are confident in their ability to perform these tasks.

The ability to be calm under stress is a must as some dogs struggle with the grooming process and need extra love and patience to get them through their groom.

My name is Ella Wipatene and I am an Honours student in ENGR489 at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. This research project is work towards my thesis.

The purpose of this project is to create a Puppy AI Mobile Application to aid dog owners in the first 1-2 years. Your participation will support this research by testing if the current requirements meet the needs and expectations of real-life users. The form will ask questions about challenges and resources when owning a dog, and take approximately 15 minutes.

I couldn't think of a more perfect way to end 2023 than with these guys on a bush adventure.

2023 was definitely a year I won't forget, and I'm hoping that 2024 brings some great things (no more covid would be nice 🤞).

Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday season, if you celebrate or not, if you're working through or making the most of your holiday.

On Saturday we had our staff Christmas party, all but one staff member attended (she was unable to make it 😭). So we filled her absence with an interloper for the day. It was great to get everyone together for some fun, food, drinks, games, and white elephant gifts. This has been a great year, with some awesome dogs and awesome people.

We end this year with the best team of staff ever, some great new dogs who joined us this year, some OG dogs who hope continue to come for many more years. My wonderful team surprised me with a card and a bottle of whiskey 😭.

Here is hoping everyone has a Merry Christmas (Grinchmas), and a Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing everyone next year, and meeting some new dogs too. Thank you from the team here, we appreciate each and everyone who has supported us this year so we can continue doing what we love.

As you see from our previous post 2 of our groomers won prizes at Groomalong 2023. However, all of our groomers attended the expo. Here is a summary of our team's first time at Groomalong.

Sienna placed 3rd in “Pet Style - Entry Level” with Chester.

Carla also competed in “Pet Style - Entry Level” with Mazzy, was a close match for 3rd place.

Anna placed 3rd in the “Model Head - Adult” with her last-minute entry.

Morgan was entered in the “Show Style - Intermediate” but had to pull out due to a shoulder injury, and hasn't been able to groom for a few months. Thankfully she is getting better, and we should see her grooming again soon. In saying that Morgan was the only one that attended all 3 days, and all the seminars that were run over the weekend.

Judges did not have to hand out prizes (up to 3rd place), so the fact that 2 of the 3 competing staff members won a prize is amazing. We are proud of the team for seeking self, and industry improvement, and look forward to seeing more growth from them all. Enjoy a few photos from the weekend.

Congratulations to our grooming assistant/trainee groomer, Anna, on getting 3rd in the model head competition! We are very proud of Anna, she is the one who bathes and dries all the dogs, and under the guidance of our head groomer has been doing mini grooms and assisting on some full grooms.

We couldn't be prouder of Anna for entering, let alone coming third! Her model head only arrived the day before the competition, so her choice to enter was a last-minute decision. We can't wait to see her progress and grow in confidence as her training continues. Well done, Anna!

Today is my last day at The Barking Lot as im relocating to Auckland- worst day everrrrrr. I've been here almost a year and what an amazing time it's been. The dogs have brought such joy to my days and Delta, Minni, Junie and Charlie Jo will have that special place in my heart forever. I wish all the best and good heath, may we meet again. Bye babies😭
