After 20 KittyCat rescues I'm almost finished at Remutaka St in Trentham. 💪 At 4.30am I caught the lucky last Mumma Cat - a seasoned Grey female with half a tail.

The bigger problem is over on Merton St, which the SPCA and I will tackle together after the 6th. And I still have to find Bobbins again - I'm hoping she's still around :(

Unfortunately this colony has introduced us to the nasty Upper Respiratory Illness - Calicivirus - which has completely upended this season, and our 2025 year ahead. Heartbreakingly, our intake is CLOSED for the unforeseen future.

Calicivirus in a shelter environment is an absolute nightmare and it has sadly ruined us. It is highly contagious and long lasting with continuous reinfections, there is no testing, no cure, a lack of medications and ongoing care and the cats who suffer with it the most may have the potential to be ongoing carriers for life 💔 And who knows who or which cats - it's a complete guessing game.

Because of this our HQ must stay in permanent isolation lockdown until the unforeseen future. We may have a few spare fosters if more step up - otherwise our intake is closed as we need to most importantly focus and commit to our 28 cats at HQ, plus the other cats affected in separate foster care.

I am absolutely exhausted from dealing with this disaster over the past 10 weeks, and until I finally get a break to get my head back together, a long term plan will soon be put in place. For now I know that we need to move a few of our HQ cats onto long-term foster homes or forever homes. These homes must have no other cats and be longterm reliable and committed. 🙏

In 2024, we welcomed an incredible 191 cats of all ages, personalities, genders, temperaments and health conditions from the greater Wellington region, with even a few from beyond. Each one of them has their own story, and with your help, we can continue to provide them with the love and care they deserve. Together, we're making a real difference in their lives and we are forever grateful. Thank you 🙏

🩷 MISS LACEY 💜

Meet Lacey: A Sweet and Spirited Soul Ready to Join Your Family!

Lacey is a delightful soul, brimming with charm and personality. Her adorable face can instantly warm anyone's heart. Although she may be a little shy at first, it won’t take long for her to relax and reveal her vibrant spirit. If you have guests over, she might dart away momentarily, but rest assured, she’ll feel at ease once she understands they’re friendly.

Lacey's past is a bit of a mystery, but she was once a beloved house cat before becoming a stray. Her luxurious long fur had become severely matted, with 80% of it shaved off. However, her coat is now growing back beautifully. Lacey will soon have an impressive mane, and her thick, luscious fur will require weekly brushing to keep it in top condition.

This stunning girl boasts a coat of silky fur that invites endless pets and cuddles. Lacey is a playful cat, full of energy, dashing around the house with such enthusiasm that you’ll hear her joyful pitter-patter before you see her. She adores your company, often following you from room to room and even sitting outside the shower door while you wash. Her affection is truly heartwarming.

Whether it’s napping beside you during the day or curling up with you at night, Lacey loves to share those cozy moments. If the day calls for solitude, she’ll retreat to a quiet, dark spot—usually under furniture—to catch some Z's. Ideally, she would thrive in a spacious home where she can explore and lounge on windowsills, ever the little observer of neighborhood happenings, as if she’s taking her role as the watching guardian quite seriously.

Having once roamed the streets as a stray, she may be tempted to climb out open windows, so it’s wise to keep an eye on her when the breeze beckons indoors. Nevertheless, Lacey is a beautiful cat with a loving heart, eager to become the purrfect addition to your family.

Approx 2-3 years old. Good with children, good with cats but does want to be hierarchy, unsure with dogs. 💲250 Adoption Fee includes desex, 1st vaccine + booster, microchip + registration flea & wormed, house & litter trained.

Welcome Megan 💜

This beautiful girl has had a tough upbringing in her short 8/9 month old life. Megan's previous owners neglected, traumatized, and severely let her down 💔

After giving birth as only a kitten herself, Megan's babies were taken away from her far too young and sold on a community page, likely for an extra bit of Christmas cash :( They then had the audacity to dump this poor girl in the early hours of the morning on a closed down rescues property in the middle of nowhere. She spent several nights frightened and fending for herself before she was rescued. From there, Megan came to us in Wellington.

Megan is severely misunderstood, understandably confused and a bit angry. She is a curious sweetie at heart and loves to play. She is very much a cat's cat, and will take some time and patience to heal and recover. Fellow friendly cats are the best thing for her, especially for her to regain trust in humans, but we unfortunately cannot offer her this at our HQ due to still being in isolation lockdown.

⚠️ TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️

Update: Thank you HUHA for taking this girl on 🙏 🌈

93 turned into 94 with gorgeous Miss Sweetie ❤️ This beautiful Tortie is an Ōtaki stray that lives up to her name.

Lynda was in the right place at the right time with this one. Sweetie is only one year old and needs urgent help with a severe eye injury.

She's been to the vet and is on medication to keep comfortable until a prompt Monday surgery appointment with HUHANZ, who may take her in, but we're also happy to fit the bill if a kind foster can step up and help us with her recovery :)

And just like that our intake of 87 has turned into 93! 🍀 💪

Mumma Indigo gave birth this morning. Over 2 and ½ hours she birthed 6 beautiful kittens - 3 black, 1 grey and 2 tuxedo.

They are absolutely tiny and more than likely premature. We are all very grateful that she has given birth safely in our care, rather than on the hard streets.

All 6 kits are good feeders but we are keeping an eye on one in particular, which we've already given a supplement feed. 🤞 Indigo is gratefully a natural and attentive Mum, so we're hoping to keep things more hands off, but we'll see how things progress.

😻 HQ VOLUNTEERS NEEDED 🌻

We're looking for adult volunteers to help with our KittyCat HQ in Central Upper Hutt! :D

⏰ AVAILABLE TIMES:

• Sunday and Monday Morning - 10.30/11am (Key Holder needed)
• Wednesday and Thursday Morning - 11am
• Friday and Saturday Evening - 5.30/6pm

We need dedicated and reliable volunteers to help us weekly with our cat rooms. This includes:

• Feeding • Litterbox changing • Basic cleaning • Spending time and playing with the kitties • Helping to socialize cats

More hands make lighter work 💙 A shift typically takes 30-60 minutes, given you're not distracted by the cats ;) 😂 Our HQ supplies everything required, we just need you!

My personal Christmas miracle has turned into anything but 🤣 🤦‍♀️ I've learned that we have barely scraped the surface of the Remutaka Street colony.

Tonight I received a message from a kind lady who lives across the road alerting me to a bobtail grey kitten that's found itself separated from one of the two litters in our care. :'(

We got talking and I sighted another 5 stray cats, it turns out the much larger colony lives mainly around Merton St. Several are severely injured - we're talking bulging eyes, blindness in one, and 3 have severe leg injuries. :'( Grandpa Tabby in the 1st pic (taken several months ago) looks awful now. I can guarantee there will be another 20-30+ cats and this will be a massive task and undertaking.

I can't leave them, SPCA wouldn't previously help as a gentleman feeds them - but they'll likely help me 💪 Knowing so many are injured I can't ignore this colony. At the moment we simply don't have the space and I have to finish off at the colony over the road first - where there's a grey half-tailed female left. However tonight I of course caught another black female - another unaccounted for cat.

This is going to be a chaotic storm! 😭 But we can do it - when space and further funds become more available!

No further luck with trapping last night I'm afraid, as the many roaming dogs of the neighborhood keep setting the trap off 🤦‍♀️ I know where they live, but the sections they live in aren't fenced off and the owners don't seem to care.

I've done a little kiwi ingenuity in hopes to keep the dogs out of broken fence lines around the property. Time will tell 🤞

OWNERS FOUND!! :D Popeye is safely home!

⭐ FOUND - ADULT MALE TABBY - TRENTHAM, UPPER HUTT ⭐

This gorgeously round boy has been continuously visiting my trap in Remutaka St, Trentham for 8 weeks now.

Brown & White striped Tabby. He is desexed but no microchip. Young Adult, he is very friendly and I am hoping he has a home in the area 🤞 I cannot be too careful as other desexed strays have been rescued in the area with no owners coming forward so I won't rush into releasing him just yet.

⚠️ MISSING FOSTER KITTEN - NAENAE ⚠️

Foster Kitten Yoke is missing from 19-23 Cleland Cres, Naenae since Wednesday the 18th. 💔

As a wildborn kitten rescued only 6 weeks ago Yoke is a very shy and scared kitty that will rarely be seen, however sightings are key - please do not approach him!

Yoke has been in his foster home for a mere 3 weeks. While our foster was away he was being fed by The Cat Carer. Unfortunately bad judgement allowed Yoke to escape.

Yoke is a small shorthaired black kitten with big bright yellow eyes. He is unfortunately not desexed or microchipped as he was recovering from sickness and is a small cat for his age; less than 4 months old.

If you see Yoke PLEASE DO NOT APPROACH him, sightings instead are key so we can find and attempt to re-trap him. Please contact us asap if you see a small lone black kitten in the area. We are absolutely heartbroken and desperate to find him 😭 His sister and us are missing him.

About Us

KittyCat Rehoming Wairarapa started in January 2017. The SPCA in the Wairarapa closed in 2015 and left a big gap in animal welfare in the area. Originally the group came into existence to rehome stray and abandoned cats, rehome cats for owners in difficult circumstances and tame feral kittens. KRW rehomed 33 cats and kittens in 2017 and 35 in 2018. Now that the SPCA in Masterton is open again and are looking after stray, abandoned and surrendered cats, KRW is concentrating on taming feral kittens and finding homes for them.

By taking in feral kittens and desexing the parents, KRW helps control the feral cat population and keep cats away from our wildlife. This decreases the feral cat population in a humane manner and not only improves the welfare of the cats, but of the environment as a whole.

Feral kittens are fostered by a network of foster carers until they can be adopted. Whether a kitten can be tamed is dependent on their age and temperament. The optimum age to tame a feral kitten is 8 weeks and under. Older kittens can be successfully tamed depending on their individual temperament but once they reach 16 weeks of age it becomes very difficult. It can take months of care before a kitten is ready to adopt.

Our adoption fee for kittens is $140. This helps cover the costs of desexing, vaccinating and treating for parasites. We also offer reduced rates to adopters for microchipping.
