I've started a Give A Little for Merlin as funds are extremely tight, but I'd like to go forward with an orthopedic opinion before we rush into leg amputation.
Any and all help is much appreciated π Thank you all so much. π
An 8-10 week old female kitten has been found on Fergusson Drive, Heretaunga - in between Fig Tree Cafe and The Sunken Chip.
Domestic Shorthaired Tuxedo with no microchip, she is extremely underweight and flea and worm ridden. If you're missing this kitty please get in touch.

Whew it's been a day! Our wee little Merlin returned from the vets with a sad diagnosis. His leg is fractured and it's an extremely rare break - a fracture of the growth plate in his femur (not the femur itself).
Our vets are going to seek an orthopaedic opinion on Monday, but for now they have done their best to immobilize the leg with a splint which certainly isn't slowing him down one bit!
I do however think amputation may be for the best. With such a rare break I don't feel it's fair for such a young kitten to endure a long and arduous journey of splints, potential rods and surgeries - especially while he's still growing. He's such a sweet spirited kitten and isn't bothered by the cast that he likely won't be bothered by a missing limb - he's already spent goodness how long limping on it already. And unfortunately we simply don't have the costs to cover orthopaedic surgery and long term costs - but regardless, the most important thing is the long term health and well-being of the kitten, and what's best for them.
Due to this our intake will be closing as I've personally taken on too much and I need to focus on Merlins care and recovery. We also need to pay off our 4K and growing vet bill, and this will certainly add to it. Thanks all π

β FOSTER URGENTLY NEEDED β
For me to take on another stray kitten I urgently need these 2 kittens moved on π
My load is overfull and I shouldn't be taking on more than I already am. These 2 beauties are semi social outdoor born 7 week olds that won't take long to socialise, they just need to learn the good life.
Please contact me if you can help π

Little Merlin is at the vet for the day undergoing x-rays and further care for his suspected fractured leg.
If you can help donate towards Merlins care we'd really appreciate it π We currently owe our vet over 4K π Thanks all.

Last night was semi successful - Tortie Mum has been caught but no other kittens have been seen since. Overnight showed no activity, a Black Adult set off both small kitten traps but escaped, and today's rain is nothing but a hindrance.
We may have caught all of the kittens, as a staff member caught the Tuxedo Kitten, but traps and a camera are still set.
This mum seems too young to be hierarchy, so I have a feeling the Tuxedo Adult is the older female, and the Black Adult a male. It's now a waiting game, and reliance on the weather. π€

Oh please please please don't send us to afterhours on Christmas Day! πββοΈ π
Our wee little Christmas Eve boy is unfortunately favouring one of his back legs. It's very sore, inflamed and limp, but is still warm and he's trying to use it. I promptly rang AH to confirm pain meds can be given, and I'll monitor him for the next few hours. If things don't improve we'll be off to AH later today.
AH on a public holiday is π²280 JUST to be seen to - that doesn't include further treatment. He's eating and acting normally otherwise, but it does explain his hissy demeanor. C'mon world give me a break! π€

Merry Christmas to me! π πΉ
The resthome colony is bigger than originally thought, of course π . As well as 4/5 kittens we've seen their Tortie Mum, a Black Adult and another Tuxedo Adult - and tonight I caught 2 of the Kittens and an unexpected 10 month old Tuxedo Male Kitten. I think this is the same kittens family we took in from St Pat's a few months back.
An 8/9 week old Black Male Kitten was also found today in Ranfurly Street, Upper Hutt screaming from a bush. A kind couple took him in, and upon finding no microchip I've concluded he's likely a stray as he's on the skinny side and flea ridden. He is a scared little grateful hunny bun, but is definitely houseborn.
Christmas Day today looks like more trapping and travelling for me! π Wish me luck.

There has been no luck yet with the kittens of St Joseph's Lifecare Resthome.
I'd like to go back home to Tawa but I need local support to help upkeep the traps . π
If you live in or around the Silverstream / Upper Hutt area and are in a position to help PLEASE contact me asap. I need help with refreshing the food in the traps, and potential help with taking in, and holding onto the kittens in traps temporarily until I can arrive. Thanks all π

I'm at a resthome in Upper Hutt after receiving an urgent callout for several young kittens living wild in a crated & rubbish area.
Wish us luck π€ There are 4 or 5 kittens and Mum may still potentially be around, although she hasn't been seen in a little while. I've only seen 2 kittens so far but 3 traps are set alongside a live camera.
I worry the kits are too young to be eating solids, and may not be heavy enough for the traps, but they're too fast to hand catch - here's hoping π

KittyCat Rehoming Wairarapa started in January 2017. The SPCA in the Wairarapa closed in 2015 and left a big gap in animal welfare in the area. Originally the group came into existence to rehome stray and abandoned cats, rehome cats for owners in difficult circumstances and tame feral kittens. KRW rehomed 33 cats and kittens in 2017 and 35 in 2018. Now that the SPCA in Masterton is open again and are looking after stray, abandoned and surrendered cats, KRW is concentrating on taming feral kittens and finding homes for them.
By taking in feral kittens and desexing the parents, KRW helps control the feral cat population and keep cats away from our wildlife. This decreases the feral cat population in a humane manner and not only improves the welfare of the cats, but of the environment as a whole.
Feral kittens are fostered by a network of foster carers until they can be adopted. Whether a kitten can be tamed is dependent on their age and temperament. The optimum age to tame a feral kitten is 8 weeks and under. Older kittens can be successfully tamed depending on their individual temperament but once they reach 16 weeks of age it becomes very difficult. It can take months of care before a kitten is ready to adopt.
Our adoption fee for kittens is $140. This helps cover the costs of desexing, vaccinating and treating for parasites. We also offer reduced rates to adopters for microchipping.
KittyCat Rehoming Wairarapa is registered Charitable Trust CC54963.
