Cheryl Trust Practitioner NZ Sharing a peaceful and trusting approach to helping animals with their behaviour issues

I love doing these sessions - its amazing working with people and their animals on this level and seeing the changes in just one session! It just the loveliest way to work with animals that are anxious or aggressive, going at their pace and helping them understand life doesnt have to be this way, they can come through this.

Wow its been another big year for me and my little business, but its nearly done so it’s time to post my gratefulness post 💜 and say goodbye to 2024

I’ve enjoyed every one of my #400 plus sessions over the year; helping animals with anxious behaviour through to aggressive behaviour and everything in between, over 2 dozen group events with reactive or unconfident dogs through to groups enjoying my horses, healings, and more.

I’ve had some tough days as some of you will know I lost Holly to a brain tumour earlier in the year which I found heartbreaking. She was alot of dog and she has been missed everyday since she had to go. I’ve also had my mum unwell and I’ve had the most kindest clients when I had to reschedule during the year.

I’ve enjoyed working with the dog’s from the rescues this year. Because I am full time I could fit more in 💜 so I worked with a whole lot more dogs that were needing new families.

Thank you KEYSAR RESCUE Ellie's Canine Rescue & Rehome Christine Batista for the continuous hard work you all do for dogs- you are superstars.

This year also saw the Dog Adventure Park open to the public. That’s been a huge hit even if I’ve struggled with the technology 😬. We love seeing the photos of dogs being dogs and enjoying the safety of a private space.

We also extended the horse yards to have another spot for horses to host my clients safely.

And I had my first road trip to help a dog through my charity A Dogs Life, recently going to Christchurch to help Ripa and his family.

I’m so grateful for all that’s been achieved- But I’ve also got to mention how much my clients have achieved- YOU 💜 so many of you have done an amazing job of changing your habits and changing your dogs lives. Dogs that were aggressive or anxious or lost are now calm, peaceful, happy, and confident 🫶 so grateful to have amazing clients like you. It’s been so rewarding showing you there is another way, that there is always hope 💜…animals can change in a heartbeat (once we do) - so thank you from my heart to yours for giving this work (and me) a go.

I know next year is going to be bigger and busier again, I am looking forward to it and have big plans for 2025, especially around my charity ‘A Dogs Life’

Lastly I will take a moment and share how grateful I am to my beautiful horse Whisky who had me search for a different approach to help him with his ‘issues’….which has lead me to so many great learnings, including becoming a Trust Technique Practitioner ♥️ Thank you to him, and to all the cats, dog’s, and horses I meet through this work that continue to teach me.

Forever grateful

Happy new year wishes to you all, wishing you the very best for 2025

I had my favourite kind of session today with Kora and Ziggy - helping a foster to adopt dog that is struggling and that is anxious about life start to be peaceful.

Kora is in a brand new home and her new family want to set her up well right from the start. So they got in touch and we had a big fat double session today covering everything good for Kora.

Kora hasn’t had much experience in life, so she’s a bit nervous about things.

Starting today she will learn how to be calmer, that’s quickly followed by happiness, and then comes thriving in her new home with her new family.

And Ziggy was so glad to come today as he has been supporting her and was a bit tired himself with all the changes to his routine.

Fun afternoon with my horses yesterday

I hosted an event of being with my herd which was a little different. We got to brush and be with a horse, then we took them for a walk through the river, along the bank to a great grass spot for a munch ( I love listening to horses eating the long grass ), enjoying the sunny afternoon, and then we wandered back.

Was so relaxing and fun 💜 I will host more of these !

Clever cooper is starting to show calmer behaviours.

We are two weeks in and today for session 3 we discussed crate etiquettes to have a dog be completely emotionally happy in a crate.

Then we added some info to help with his reactiveness on lead - he gets very full of energy very fast.

I gave mum and dad a great exercise for cooper on lead, which will emotionally change the game.

Quincy and spot have come for the foundation series. Their first session was yesterday and they have quite a list we could work on together.

Mum and dad really want them going better on lead so they can do more things with them.

There’s a bit of work to get them all ready for that.

Will be interesting to see where they get to week 1

That’s me for a couple of days - I’m now on Christmas break 🎄

So I want to wish you a very merry Christmas time, enjoy yourselves whatever you get up to.

Thank you for all the kind Christmas wishes my way, for all your support, and always for spreading my name to others so the dogs get here and get help.

Enjoy your Christmas festivities. Keep all the chocolate to yourselves and don’t let the dogs find it!

Give them all an extra hug or two as from one Christmas to another it changes, we lost our Holly (4) earlier this year and I miss her a lot

And if you get a pup for Christmas and need a hand, I’m right here and would love to help especially if it’s a rescue dog - they are my favourite ❤️ ….we have 6 of them and they are a lot of fun (challenging sometimes too 🙃)

Merry Christmas xx

Daisy came for a big double session yesterday to help her with her reactiveness, especially with dogs.

We started to show her she could be calmer with things that she reacts to by working with my goats - she thought they were very scary but within a few minutes she had stopped jumping and lunging and barking.

So we moved in to my horses. She again moved through the emotions and got calmer. Mum got to practice lead work and supporting Daisy so that she could find a peaceful place instead of reacting.

Then we moved onto my dog Maddie. Daisy thought that was overwhelming and went into full jumping and lunging. Mum started supporting Daisy to show her how to find neutral in this space.

It was the beginning of showing Daisy she can go differently. This dog has had some big issues with dogs. There’s lots of homework and practicing for mum over Christmas. They did really well and I’m looking forward to hearing how they go with their new tools.

Session 5 was with gorgeous Minnie who is now going so well on lead, able to walk with mum, smiling (and breathing) instead of stopping and sitting and shaking.

We added some more information for crate and visitors- it’s a theme in December. And how to get Minnie more comfortable with people.

Then we finished with dog work - my Maddie came out to walk with Minnie. At first minnie growled and barked then quickly realised mum was supporting her, so she relaxed right down.

I took her for a walk with Maddie which was ok - just! She got herself a bit worried so we stopped there and discussed where she needed more support. She did so well and has come so far 💜 great work mum and dad

Squeezed in a quick session with Clover in Nelson (online) to finish off getting her prepared for Christmas visitors.

Mums been busy practicing all the crate protocols to create a safe space for clover while people stay over the holidays.

Easier for a lot of dogs not to be part of everything on Christmas. It can be a lot for dogs ! And clover is a bit wary of people so there’s no point everyone getting even more concerned on holidays, they are for chillaxing.

While we talked through everything and made sure mum knew exactly what to do to support clover (and advance her training so that she can be around more people) we asked clover in the crate.

This is her in the crate with the door open -snuggled down. Great to see she is starting to feel safe in there. Good job mum 💜

Want to see the magic
This is the magic of the Trust Technique.
This family were struggling to get Ripa to be ok with Dad. Ripa thought he should bark and huff and leap and growl and snap his teeth at his new dad.
I went to visit him in Christchurch for 3 days and help him with his behaviours. I left the family with homework and got sent this last night....I cant tell you how much this means to me to see this dog and his dad so happy and enjoying each other. Its gold. PS and its all because strangers cared and helped donate to get me to this dog - Have a look and pat yourselves on the back, we did a good thing together🫶💜🫶💜🫶 ps there is another vid in the comments.

Yesterday these two little superstars had their 5th session too.

Rosie and Frankie came because they just couldn’t stop barking…if it moved or made noise they barked at it ….and having two barky dogs in the house was getting really frustrating for mum and dad.

Frankie also couldn’t go on walks as he was too reactive to other dogs.

So we’ve worked over four weeks and the dogs are now totally different dogs. The dogs have mostly given up their barking especially in the garden where it was non stop.

Busy Rosie was so calm yesterday, she self sat a million times she was that relaxed and even lay down. And Frankie just had a permanent smile 💜

For our last session Maddie came out to help with their dog reactiveness and in under 4 minutes Rosie was lying down and Frankie had stopped barking and was just watching Maddie calmly.

Looking at how well they were doing with mum and dad’s support and their new habits, I thought we could go for bonus points and I took Frankie for a walk with Maddie.

He was not sure at all when I took his lead as he’d never been this close to a new dog, but I supported him and me Maddie and Frankie went for a walk. Frankie quickly realised he was safe and was smiling again. It was gorgeous!

Never one to miss out Rosie wanted to try that too - and she aced it. Sitting down calmly in front of Maddie 💜 this work is such a gamechanger, so happy these guys came my way. They had tried other trainers with no success so I’m rapt they trusted me enough to give it a go, and then promptly got stuck in with the homework. Week 2 they had huge changes, and week 3 and 4….then we had our 5th session to take it to the next level. Well done you 4 👏🙌👏🙌

My friend Doug 🥰💜🥰
He came to visit me because he doesn’t like people much and had taken to telling them really loudly (biting) and he was reactive to dogs so mum couldn’t walk him anywhere.

His mum and dad were a bit lost and so was he.

Over 5 sessions we worked through my foundation programme and the change in Doug is spectacular

This is what practicing your homework brings you - a calm neutral happy dog 💜

I love when owners get stuck in and trust me and the process, i promise your dog can change, if you do your homework. Their success is only limited by your effort.

I also love how happy he was yesterday and he asked for all the cuddles and was so excited to be here. I think he loved coming here as much as his mum and dad did - top effort all 3 of you.

Will pop a couple of vids in the comments so you can see his journey.

Cooper came for his second session today. Getting him started on a different way of going so that everyone can relax especially when walking him out in the world.

He gets a bit scared of things so we will build his confidence plus show him how to be calmer 🥰❤️🥰 it will be a different world for him and his family

Reflecting this morning on my Christchurch experience with Ripa and his family, and feeling happy about what we achieved.

We had our top 3 goals for 3 days - goal 1 get him not reacting / barking /air snapping / worried about dad. Goal 2 able to go through the garage door as he absolutely couldn’t. Goal 3 able to go in the car without falling apart and shaking /shutting down
Added goal 4 not chase the cats

Over the 3 days we also did a lot of lead work and work with his worry about noises inside and outside the house. I did body work every day to help him release some tension and soreness, plus trapped emotions.

His mum and dad said a lot of ‘that’s the first time ripas done that’ which was great for Ripa. First time he fell asleep on the couch💜first time he slept on the floor spread out 💜 first time he’s been out the front 💜 first time he’s been in the garage 💜 first time he’s played with mum 💜 first time he hasn’t jumped on his favourite little person 💜 first time he’s snored etc etc

All these moments were showing me how peaceful his brain was getting. 3 days made big changes for Ripa now mum and dad have 2 weeks of new habits supporting Ripa then we should have a much different dog again.

They will continue to work on the goals, but we had so much success each day, now it’s just a matter of reinforcing the messsge for Ripa, reminding him if he gets lost that he can be ok with dad, he can go in the car, he doesn’t need to chase the cats. And mum and dad have the tools and instructions to help him.

I will keep you updated but that’s a wrap on my trip.

My biggest thanks to all those who donated to my charity that helps rehomed dogs that are struggling in their new environment- you all made this possible so THANK YOU all so much

And a big shout out to the amazing lady that looked after my dogs while I was away. Having her come daily and be with my crazy lot meant I could go away and help Ripa knowing my dogs were looked after - thank you so much!

*I love doing these sessions, its amazing to work with people and their animals on this level and see the changes before my eyes in just one session. Its just the loveliest work and is why I am passionate about teaching this and why I chose to be a practitioner in this particular training. I saw how it worked for my animals and just had to learn more...now I get to share it with people and that is such a privilege and a gift.

*If you have any issue that you may want to work with you and your pet I am available to help you. For your dog this could be any of the following - scared of travel, scared of other animals, scared of people, chases other animals, scared of thunder and lightening, banned from doggy day care for aggression/fear/anxiety, unable to socialise, lunges at dogs on lead, barking issues, guarding issues, new environment, new baby in the house, new animal introductions, end of life worries. For Horses is could be any of the following - anxiety, spooking, wont go in stable, wont go in float, doesn`t like people, biting, kicking,

*I am a certified and insured Trust Technique Practitioner. I work with all animals specializing in Horses and Dogs - but can be minis, donkeys, cows, sheep, goats, llamas, cats, rabbits, birds, etc and can work in person or on skype/facetime.

*I work one on one with you and your animal usually at a time that is a quiet time for your animal (i.e. not feeding time, or walkies time) and we go through the practice of the trust technique so that you learn the technique and can apply it confidently with your animal. This normally takes just over an hour, (max up to 1.5 hours as that is a lot of learning for you both.)
