Beautiful Red is our current longest stayer, at just under 8 months. Red has a toe injury which he has been receiving physio and veterinary care for.

Since he has been with us for quite some time, we have been having lots of sleepovers with him, having him in the house while we work, and simply just extra-enriching his time with us, seeing as it’s been a longer stay than usual.

Reds favourite things are toys, cuddles, walks down the river and walks down nearby rural roads.

He is terrific overnight in the crate, and gets on with the other greyhounds amazingly!

Red will be ready for a home very soon❤️❤️❤️

🐾A warm welcome to our new arrivals!🐾

After saying goodbye to a few of our greyhounds over the weekend, we’re excited to say hello to some fresh faces here at the kennels!

Welcoming Bridey, Whiskey, Darwin, Nugget, Sammie, Graeme, Tipsy, and Abby to Great Mates Kirwee! These lovely newcomers arrived on Monday and have just had their assessments with kids, Corky the terrier, and Wolfie the cat. Most of them are showing promising signs of being cat-trainable!

Photos we get sent from the vets Selwyn Rakaia Veterinary Services Ltd. 🫶🏻❤️. Wee Nova spending the day in office. She went on a run, had a bath, slept for hours and got alllll the cuddles! Now she is back at home, relaxing in the crate inside⭐️💅

This wee sausage is perfect in all regards. Amazing with other dogs, super confident and social too. The cat ran past her this morning while we started to cat test her… unfortunately the cat actually ran out the door before she realised so we put a pin in that😝

Corns in Greyhounds‼️‼️

Corns are a common issue many greyhounds face, primarily due to the unique anatomy of their feet. These hard, circular masses of keratin with a deep root develop as a response to trauma, such as stone bruising etc.

Corns can cause significant discomfort, especially when walking on hard surfaces, much like having a small shard of glass in your own foot.

Fortunately, treatment is simple, relatively painless, and cost-effective through a procedure called a Superficial Flexor Tenotomy (SFT). In this surgery, the vet cuts the tendon of the affected toe, which relieves the pressure on the corn, causing it to fall out naturally. The procedure is quick, typically taking around 15 minutes, involves only 1-2 stitches, and costs as little as $350, however the average is about $500. Recovery time is just a few days, and in many cases, the dog walks out of the clinic much more comfortably.

Hulling, a method of removing corns by scooping them out, is not recommended or best practice. This outdated practice leaves a deep wound, often requiring stitches, and the corn almost always grows back, leading to repeated procedures that increase both the dog’s discomfort and the overall cost.

If your greyhound has a corn, we recommend discussing the SFT surgery with your vet. Below are a few local clinics experienced with this procedure:

May (May Baxter) is an absolute sweetheart🫶🏻.

She is dog social, playful, brilliant on lead, crate trained, and amazing with kids!

She is calm, polite and very gentle with children. Joel even walked her over to the playground to show her his cool tricks!

The newest editions to Adobe kennels arrived last night. Just days after the sudden passing of champion breeder and pioneer of our sport Paul Wheeler, let’s hope these Quistis Bale x Fernando Bale pups can do his lines proud. RIP Paul, may your legacy continue.
