You have all season to pick your bird to have it mounted. Choose a good specimen. Unless it's a rare bird that you'll never shoot again. Limit damage after the shot. Handle the bird by bill or feet and freeze asap. Package them properly. Some taxidermists will not mount freezer burnt birds, and also extremely shot up or birds brought in bloody and mangled. You are spending your hard earned money on a piece of art that you are going to look at the rest of your life, take 5 minutes to properly package it for the freezer. This means smoothing out the feathers, wiping off excess blood, wrapping soaking wet paper towels around the head making sure to cover the eyes and bill junction, and around both feet. Laying the head on the birds back, not under a wing, and putting it in a ziplock or plastic bag and rolling it up tight getting out as much air as possible. Great bird mounts start with great birds. Just a reminder on how to properly freeze your birds for taxidermy. Takes less than a minute.
Wrap the face and feet in wet paper towels, tuck the head, place in a ziploc, push the air out and freeze.
That alone will keep them mountable for years and years. The thicker the bag, the better. Can also double wrap.
Vac packing is good, don’t overdo it. Happy hunting.
