We responded to a clients plea for help regarding her arena she had built 10/2024 … that she can still not ride on.

We made a site visit and will be writing an independent report on what needs to be rectified and completed by the contractor that she had engaged.

Horse arenas need to be built by contractors who understand the needs of an equestrian arena… they are NOT driveways, house pads or roads, they do NOT follow the lay of the land and MUST be levelled using modern technology.

We have just left Horses Helping Humans Taranaki, Hōiho Hāpai Hapori we had been asked to come up with our sand cleaner and get the stones out of her arena and round pen.

We met Laura and totally vibed with her vision and the space their charity have up there at Warea, Taranaki. Such a great service for youth and well embraced by their commmunity and region. We got to meet the landowners and mentors Chris and Steak Goodin and stayed at their beautiful bed and breakfast homestead, lucky Peter and I !

When choosing sprinklers make sure you know your minimum water pressure, your flow rate and the size of your pipe and fittings.

If you don’t have enough flow and pressure or the right pipe (directly from source) it will not be able to build up enough pressure to make the water reach as far as you need it to.

If your pressure is not at the high end, you are best buying two or more sprinklers to run on a timed circuit, one at a time.

Also you do not want the sprinklers to overlap or pool in places which will make your surface uneven and sink in places.

We offer irrigation consultations and provide a basic system able to be upgraded with options to streamline the use with the likes of apps, bluetooth, multi sprinkler systems.

Does your arena need irrigation?

YES!

For stability, the sand needs to bind together, and that does not magically happen... It needs water.

An analogy for you - where do you want to ride when you are at the beach? Not at the dune edge too soft, not at the waters edge too hard, but somewhere in the middle. It is just right when you can see your hoof print, and you are not sinking deep into the sand.

This is what you are aiming to recreate with your surface.

How do I do this?

Start by investigating where your water comes from, your available pipes, and the flow rate.

Then, you can see your local irrigation specialist to talk about the best ways to irrigate OR book an Irrigation Consult WITH US so we can talk in your language and work through the best way to DIY within your means.

You can go full elaborate automated digital pop-up flashy spensy OR a hose, and a lawn sprinkler is better than NOTHING!

Well done and huge thanks to Daniel Webb for all he does for the show jumpers to create the best possible surfaces within the means available.

ASK what the moisture level is of the surface you are about to ride on.

Not great when horses are jumping out of 5cm holes like soft sand at the beach at shows.

We are keen to do laps in the water truck and grooming 👋

Successful day today at a Taranaki Pony Club removing stones (some up to 8cm) in their arena.

There sure will be some happy ponies with a spectacularly clean surface to ride upon at the next rally!

ARENA SURFACE DEPTH…

Did you know your surface should never get below 5-6cm for low level, and 10cm for a high level arena.

The base of an arena is made as hard as a road, so IF your surface is shallow, you are risking serious injury to your horse, and should definitely not be jumping on it.

A straight sand surface should be at optimum 7.5cm. Sand should be stable not loose. It’s essential to test your arena sand before topping up so you can get the right sand that will improve your surface. Not all sands are created equal!

A rubber and sand blend surface should be 8-10cm with the lower half being compacted and untouched and the top few cm is what is groomed.

For a fibre surface you need around 12.5cm of Euro Sand, A1 or similar.
