SPCA Pets of the Year is back for another year! 📸

We’re on the search for the stars of our 2025 SPCA Calendars, and it’s time for the competition to begin! This year we have two calendar categories – cats and dogs 🐈🐕

Choose your favourite photo of your feline friend or canine companion, and use it to create a picture-pawfect profile over at www.spca.nz/poty24.

Share their profile with friends, family and colleagues and let the voting commence! Every vote raises vital funds for the thousands of animals that come into our care each year. All entries that raise $150 or more by the closing date is guaranteed a spot in the calendar too!

With some amazing prizes up for grabs from our sponsor OPPO New Zealand, dust off your camera and get snapping! Learn more at the link above.

Would you like to do something productive, yet relaxing with your weekend? Become a rag hero! 😎

The Whanganui SPCA are looking for help cutting the sheets we have had donated, into rags! If you would like to help, pop on down to 134 London Street and ask for a bag/box of sheets. Thank you in advance. 💙

Rags are used for cleaning animal cages. It’s important that we don’t transfer germs  from one cage to another, so a new rag is used for each cage - so we never have enough rags!

The days are growing colder, and our shelter is filled with the soft whimpers of puppies longing for the warmth of a fire and a loving cuddle. 🐶

We have so many beautiful 2-3 month old pups who are waiting, with hopeful eyes, for a forever home where they can feel safe and cherished. Each one has a gentle nature, ready to bring joy and companionship to your family, fitting in perfectly with your current pets and children. They’re at the perfect age to be trained and become a beloved part of your life.
If it's older dogs you seek, a dog who is already trained and is ready to slip seamlessly into your home, we have plenty of loving adults too.

Are you ready to open your heart and home to a new family member? Please visit our website to read more about these precious souls and submit an application if you find one who tugs at your heartstrings.

From sickly, hungry and sore, to a beautiful and healthy boy… happy to Yuki!

This darling was living among other strays, all hungry and suffering from cat flu. In his hunger, Yuki had evidently licked something he shouldn’t have, and his tongue was swollen with a chemical burn, causing incredibly painful ulcers. The pain prevented him cleaning himself or eating, leading Yuki to be in an absolute state by the time he came into SPCA.

Fast-forward to today, and this sweetheart is healed, healthy and happy! He recently got adopted into a loving forever home meaning his former life of neglect is behind him. Thank you to everyone who adopts animals like him, giving them the happy endings they deserve!

Did you know that New Zealand's ban on live exports by sea is under threat?

According to our survey, 63% of the New Zealand public aren't aware that the Government is planning to reverse our world-leading ban 😧 This would be a national embarrassment, and a huge step backwards for animal welfare in New Zealand.

Photographs taken on board live export ships show the horrific conditions these animals are forced to suffer through. Cramped spaces, standing in their own urine and faeces, many are subjected to extreme temperatures and suffer from heat stress.

There's less than three weeks left to sign the petition ❤️ Please speak up for the animals that can't speak for themselves by adding your name here: https://petitions.parliament.nz/79ff1ae2-f2e8-43c5-6c98-08dc33f5abe2

‼️Urgent Call for Puppy Fosters‼️

PLEASE SHARE

We are UREGENTLY seeking compassionate and loving foster homes for our puppies. Currently, we have 31 canines in our care and only 7 kennels. This is why we heavily rely on foster homes to help us house these dogs. Our capacity is stretched beyond the limit, and we desperately need your help to provide temporary homes for some adorable 4 week old pups. (photo is NOT of the puppies)
You need to:
🐾 be able to provide a warm, safe and secure (fully fenced) home
🐾be able to feed them 4 times a day
🐾have all dogs in your house hold vaccinated
🐾have the time and love to give these pups
We provide everything else. Please apply below if you can help us. (photo is NOT of the puppies)

Furrever home Friday!

“Dora”, now known as Maple has fit right into our home. She’s always busy either kneading, playing with toys, meowing for human food or having cuddles with any visitor she can get her paws on. Her new favourite spot in the house appears to be the bathroom sink 😂 she’s definitely a brave wee kitty with a huge personality and we have a feeling she may turn into a water cat! So happy we were able to bring her home.

Edit: Tiffany has now found her home. 💙Transformation Thursday! 😺

Poor Tiffany came into our centre thin, disheveled and scared with four beautiful babies in tow. After some time in a loving foster home in Palmerston North, Tiffany transformed into seemingly a whole new cat! Tiffany was looking for a home in Palmerston North SPCA for 5 long months with no interest in her 😞 She has come back to the Whanganui SPCA in the hopes of finding her furrever home here. Her babies have all found their homes, now it's her turn. Could it be with you? 🐾

Have you lost a pet recently or know someone who has? 😟
Sometimes things happen and pets wander off, it is best to be prepared and know where to look. 🧐
Did you know that the SPCA does NOT post our lost and found animals on Facebook?
We use a website called Lost Pet, as part of the Companion Animals ZN Register and it is available for you to do the same! If you have lost your pet you can create a listing on Lost Pet that will allow others (including the SPCA) to track you down if they find your pet. 🐱🐰🐶
You can include photos, a physical and behavioral description, when and where your pet went missing and have your details in the listing.
You can also search local listings to see if someone (including the SPCA) has found your pet! This is a much more reliable source than Facebook. Please spread the word so we can help these beloved pets find their owners and go back home. 🏡

Who's the cutest button of them all? Quince of course! 🐥

Quince found herself a bit lost and far away from home. No one has come looking for this adorable button so we are ready to help her find a new, loving home. Quince is not the most social bird with humans but she would love to go to a home with other little Quail friends.

You can read more about Quince here: https://www.spca.nz/adopt/animal/608329/bird-quince-whanganui

We recently had a visit from not-so-little Spud!
Spud was fostered from a young age and built a special bond with his foster Mum. They were reunited for a quick visit, it was a very special moment for his new family to meet the women who helped raise wee Spud.

It just goes to show, you never really know how big they will get!
