It’s nice to see the back of the colder months as we finally push on towards warmer weather. But of course, as the temperature increases so do the fleas! It’s important to maintain flea control all year round as fleas are constantly present in our lovely coast climate but it is during the warmer months that they are particularly abundant. Now is the time to ensure your pet is protected and ready for the oncoming summer with these Bravecto promotions!

August Is Oral Health Awareness Month!

Did you know that at the age of 2 around 70% of cats and 80% of dogs are already beginning to show signs of dental disease? Just like us, cats and dogs can suffer from oral health issues, problems that begin with the build up of plague that hardens into tartar. If left untreated, this can lead to gingivitis, a condition where the gums become inflamed and painful. Eventually periodontal disease will develop, which not only means the loss of teeth, but also puts other organs in the body at risk for infection and disease. A healthy smile means a healthy pet and there are a number of ways to keep your pet's teeth clean! From specialised diets, to dental treats, to water-additives and special pet toothpaste, speak to the nurses at reception to find out what works for you and your pet to keep you both smiling.

With moderate to severe tartar build up, a dental cleaning is necessary where the teeth are scaled and polished to properly treat dental disease. This involves a general anaesthetic in order to properly clean the mouth and assess the health of the teeth. This is often the best way to stay on top of and maintain oral health, as a scale and polish will ensure the teeth are clean and healthy before continuing on with dental maintenance through brushing, and dental diets, treats, and special dental toys. If you are interested in a dental cleaning for your pet and would like to know more, our nurses at reception would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Well, it’s official! We’re well and truly over halfway through the year and experiencing a very chilly winter. Just like us, our pets can suffer from the change in temperature, with older pets especially feeling the cold. It’s at this time that we may recognise changes in our pets with the weather causing extra challenges to overcome and aggravating existing conditions.

You may notice that your pet seems reluctant to be active, especially first thing in the morning, with dogs experiencing intermittent lameness and a reluctance to run, and cats having difficulty jumping up on to furniture and grooming themselves. This can be a sign of arthritis – a problem that isn’t exclusive to old pets. The most common form of arthritis found in pets is degenerative joint disease, which is a progressive condition that can occur due to age, past injuries, or genetics, but there are many options available to manage it.

If you believe your pet may be showing signs and you’d like some more information, you are welcome to contact the clinic to book in an appointment with your vet to discuss the range of supplements, specialised diets, and medications available to decide the best course of action for your pet.

Stay warm out there!

All the best,
The team at Whangaparaoa Vet Centre.

Lest We Forget, the sacrifice and strength shown 108 years ago.

We are CLOSED for ANZAC Day and will resume normal business on Wednesday 26th April.
ANZAC Day is a time of remembrance and appreciation. This year you can show appreciation to your best-fur-friend and make them these dog-friendly ANZAC biscuits:

INGREDIENTS
1 cup plain flour
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup natural applesauce
1/2 cup desiccated coconut
2 tbsp golden syrup or molasses
1 tbsp water
1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 175°C and line a tray with baking paper.
Sift the flour into a bowl. Add the oats, and coconut.
In a separate bowl, mix the applesauce, & golden syrup.
Stir the bicarbonate of soda into the liquid mixture.
Add the liquid to the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.
Using a spoon, roll out bite-size balls and place on baking tray.
Bake for 12-15min or until golden. Make sure they have cooled down before serving to your dog!

While we enjoy hunting for Easter eggs and eating chocolate, this is a treat our furry family members should avoid! Chocolate contains a derivative of coffee called 'theobromine' and is unable to be digested by dogs. If you see or suspect your dog has eaten chocolate of any amount, please contact a veterinarian as soon as possible. Even if your dog doesn't show symptoms, it is best to seek professional guidance. Signs of chocolate toxicity show around 6-12 hours after ingestion, long after absorption has taken place, making it far more complicated to treat in clinic. Typical symptoms of chocolate ingestion can include: diarrhoea, panting, general restlessness, increased thirst and urination, and seizures.

We wish you a safe and paws-itive Easter!

Did you know.. fleas are more active during Autumn than any other time of year? This is due to fleas preferring cooler temperatures for reproduction and our pets gaining their lovely, thick winter coats - the perfect cozy home for a flea. The best way to avoid flea related concerns is to use all year round prevention.

Entries for the competition will be accepted until 7:00pm Friday, 31st March 2023. The winner will be randomly selected and announced on Tuesday, 2nd April 2023. Please ensure your details including phone number and email address are correctly stated on your account with us.
