Why we do what we do.
This little kitty was brought to Dr Jolin's Auckland vet clinic by a cat rescue organisation with three other sick babies for euthanasia. She had diarrhoea and was peeing bloody urine. Her sister also had the same symptoms but was 20% smaller and dehydrated. Barely two weeks old, they were found as orphans with no mother around.
Two older kitties had terrible cat flu with ulcers through their mouths and eyes and although treatment was attempted, it was not successful and they were suffering in pain being unable to eat. Dr Jolin ended their suffering with humane euthanasia.
This kitty's sister slowly faded away through the day and eventually needed euthanasia.
Luckily, this kitty was stronger than the others and Dr Jolin wanted to give her one last chance. She was tube fed milk and medications as she was not taking milk orally and after 2 days started suckling from a syringe. She comes home with Jolin every night and her 4 year old son has named her Venom.
It is the hardest decision for cat rescues to get to the point of euthanising the animals they have in their care. It is also hard on veterinarians to have to perform euthanasias on animals so young. Every euthanasia is hard. Every animal you can't save takes a toll. The reality is that these kittens wouldn't be in this position if their moms were desexed. They wouldnt be brought into the world where they get ill or abandoned. This is not the first time we have had to euthanise sick kittens and will, unfortunately, not be the last. Countless kittens and puppies get taken on by rescues organisations every year. Your dog and cat does not need to experience breeding to be a better pet. Rescue organisations are full to the brim and countless rescue staff are at breaking point. Get your pets desexed!!!!!

Since we opened in December last year we have been lucky enough to be participating in the SPCA New Zealand $10 Snip n chip campaign for Northland cats. Running only 2 days a fortnight, we are so proud to achieve 300 SPCA cat desexings and microchippings so far and help reduce the unnecessary breeding of community cats in the region 🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱
