All pet's having surgery have a individualised anaesthetic plan to ensure the safest possible anaesthetic. All of our patients are monitored from admission, before, during & after their anaesthesia through to discharge by our skilled and caring team.
We recently had Willow in for a spey. Janelle one of our many lovely nurses stayed with her while she was waking up from anaesthetic. Willow is a Merle Catahoula Leopard dog, also known as the Catahoula Cur. They are a versatile breed that was bred to work, drive cattle, hunt, guard your home or to just provide a loyal companionship. They are however best suited with an experienced dog parent that has the ability to meet their high energy demands.

What is a snuffle mat?
Snuffle mats are filled with treats which can help provide both physical and mental enrichment to dogs of all ages! Here we have 5 month old Mila using one while she stayed with us for the day at the clinic. This encourages her to use her sense of smell, reduce any anxiety, and burn any built up energy. Most dogs love to use their snuffle mats as it lets them use their natural instincts to hunt for food. This kept Mila occupied throughout her stay with us! ๐

Sid and his co-operative care journey
Very handsome Mr Sid had a few scary incidences early-on (such as a stick being caught in the roof of his mouth and causing him pain, and some gunky eyes) that meant the vet, and being handled for anything other than a pat, had become really rather scary! Sid was due for his annual vaccinations, and to be desexed.
When one of our vets was unable to vaccinate him due to his fear-induced snapping, we knew we had to call in some reinforcements!
Local Behaviour Consultant, Sinead, stepped in to teach Sid and his wonderful parents some fear free, co-operative care techniques, as seen in this video.
Cooperative care involves training an animal to not only tolerate handling and husbandry procedures, but to be an active, willing participant in these experiences. One of the most important aspects of teaching cooperative care is that the animal is allowed to โsay no.โ They can indicate using a non-aggressive, safe behavior that they want the procedure to stop. Teaching a duration target behavior is a vital foundation in cooperative care โ not only does it help to keep the animal still, but we teach the animal through the process that if at any time they break the target position (lift their head, etc.), then the handling procedure will stopโ
By teaching our animals that they can say โnoโ, they are more likely to give an enthusiastic โYes!โ
Here Sidโs dad, Sinead and nurse Chani, are preparing Sid for what his next vet visit will look like โ a stethoscope moving on his body to hear his healthy heart, and then a needle in to his bottom so that he can 'get his wheels offโ (neutered).
This requires patience and dedication from all parties (though Sid picked this up extremely quickly!) and we are proud to be working alongside such dedicated owners to help Sid feel happy about coming to see us.

Our ultrasound machine is fully digital and animal specific. Didier has spent time training in Auckland with Chris Warman, from the Vet Specialist Group (VSG). Our affiliation with VSG means that we are able to scan a patient here and if necessary, send the images to the VSG specialist for immediate interpretation, saving the patient a trip to Auckland!
