Meet Darcy

This very handsome chap is Darcy, a three year old Brussels griffon who was seen in early December after he had been bitten by a dog and had a sore leg. X-rays showed Darcy had a intraarticular fracture of his left ulna. He was referred to Animal Referral Centre where he had an internal fixation repair of the fracture.

Darcy was back to see us shortly after surgery to start physical rehabilitation which focused on maintaining his range of motion, reducing pain and inflammation and working on weight bearing on his operated leg. Then finally we worked on strengthening exercises, to regain muscle size and strength.

Darcy was a superstar during rehab and nailed all of his at home exercises with his very dedicated parents.

Isn't he just gorgeous! 🥰

It involves using a combination of modalities including massage, stretching and laser therapy as well as therapeutic exercises to decrease pain, improve range of motion, regain normal function, and improve muscle mass. A personalised rehabilitation plan is created for your pet after an assessment with our rehab practitioner.

Conditions that benefit from physical rehabilitation include:

• Hip replacement
• Fracture repair
• Hip & elbow dysplasia
• Tendinopathies
• Myopathies & muscle imbalances
• Neurological conditions including IVDD
• Traumatic spinal & nerve injuries

We use laser therapy as part of our rehabilitation treatments, laser therapy offers numerous benefits to pets with musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. Our class IV laser delivers red and near-infrared wavelengths of laser light which work at a cellular level to induce therapeutic effects, including reducing pain and inflammation and accelerating healing.

Chani is our in clinic rehabilitation practitioner, she has over sixteen years of experience as a qualified veterinary nurse and has also completed a post graduate certificate in canine rehabilitation through the university of Tennessee. Chani is passionate about physical therapy and enhancing her patients quality of life through compassionate, evidence-based treatment and care.

Good afternoon everyone, a lovely client of ours has found this dog near her house on Cairnfield Road, Kensington. Found yesterday, Female, she is unfortunately not microchipped. 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿!! 🐾☀️🩺 Just like people, animals can also suffer from sunburn! Pets who are fair-skinned or light-haired are particularly susceptible to the sun’s harsh rays.

Skin cancer occurs commonly in dogs and cats, and even though the fur provides some sun protection, your pet needs a sunblock applied every 3-4 hours on areas that have no, or little, hair.

The good news is you can buy pet-friendly sunscreen to rub on the tips of their ears, on the end of their nose, and on their stomach – these are the most commonly sunburnt areas. Normal sunscreen ingredients include zinc oxide, which can be toxic to animals, so pet-friendly sunscreen is best.

Meet Misty, she is a 4 month old domestic short haired cat that came in for her kitten booster vaccinations. Vaccinations are one way of keeping your kitty cat healthy and safe from diseases caused by bacteria and viruses. Misty thought she would be super cute and help out on reception with some paperwork! 😹

Usually we spread out for these exercises in puppy class to help the pups focus, and improve training success...not with these guys! All these pups were so relaxed and guardian-focused that they hung out like they were in their own living room! Cute!

🦷🩺 𝗕𝘆 𝟮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗮 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟴𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟳𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝘀 will have some form of periodontal disease, which is infection and inflammation of the tissues that surround and support the teeth, and this in turn leads to halitosis.

We should be doing regular, daily cleaning of our dog’s teeth, just like we do for our own. And annual check ups to avoid dental disasters.

KARAKA BERRIES!! ❌

Meet Bailey the 10 week old Springer Spaniel, she came into the clinic recently for an afterhours visit after ingesting a karaka berry. She is one very lucky puppy that her owners were aware and brought her in to see the vet Jane. The Karaka berries are highly toxic to our furry friends and if seen ingested need vet attention immediately!

Signs your dog may of ingested a berry are convulsions, spasms, hindlimb paralysis, incoordination and sadly death, 1 berry can be enough toxicity, so if you are not sure then it is always better to be on the safe side, give us a call on 094371101.
