We are looking for a few people to join our horse and our farm teams at The Farm.

Horse tasks include feeding, mucking out, moving herds, fencing, handling, riding, taking treks, assisting with lessons and school camps, taking videos and photos.

Trekking season is beginning to get going soon, so we need capable riders to take treks and bring horses back into work!

Cow team is milking a small herd of cows to feed calves and doing farm jobs, moving and sorting herds, fencing and odd jobs. You done need experience, but if you have it, amazing.

We are also working on developing more facilities, so if you are a builder that would be amazing, too!

Also need social media help, so if that’s in your skill set, yay!!!
In exchange for this unique work experience we provide you with food, accommodation, learning experiences, lessons, fun treks, and an awesome community to be a part of!

For the horses, a
large portion of what we do is help horses to be more versatile through a unique relationship based horsemanship approach, with the focus on them enjoying human handling and riding. It can be particularly rewarding to be part of that process. We find that a horse who has developed confidence in humans, in general, and also themselves, will have a better chance of being looked after and loved.

Check out www.ellenbennetthorsemanship.com ( having trouble with the website just now but I’ve put it there in case I figure it out) to get an idea of what we do, and https://www.thefarm.co.nz/ for a feel of life here.
Horse handling and riding experience required for the horse team. No experience needed for cow team. We prefer longer term stayers, but if you have experience and only a short time, give us a bell!
Start date now!

To apply, contact [email protected] or PM Ellen Bennett Horsemanship on Facebook.

We have been so so so lucky with our horse team
volunteers over the years!

Right now we have a super nice and very relaxed time. Feeding, moving, having nice mileage rides, and playing with youngsters.

If that sounds like work you’d like to do for a few weeks or months, give me a message.

POSITION AVAILABLE!

We are looking for a keen and capable person to join our horse team at The Farm. The team is 3-4 people and 40, or so, horses strong.

Tasks include feeding, mucking out, moving herds, fencing, handling, riding, taking treks, assisting with lessons and school camps, taking videos and photos.

Trekking season is slowing down now, so it’s time to get into starting, and training, new and younger horses.

We are always working on developing more facilities, so if you are a builder that would be amazing, too!

Social media skills are very helpful, so if that’s in your skill set, yay!!!

Went to Equifest and well, WOW!
WOW WOW WOW AND WOOO HOOO!

It was a great event, educational, inspiring, entertaining, fun etc etc etc

But. The main thing for me was:

The HORSE was at the center!!!

I’ve just been minding my own business, doing my own thing for the past few years and Equifest was my first foray back into the greater “horse world”.
What a change!! I’m so excited and inspired!

What excited me?
- Seeing clinicians being focused on their horses’ wellbeing, not only their outcomes, or their personal method
- Watching top level riders gracefully bow out as soon as they felt their horse having an off day
- Hearing coaches talking about improving the rider, not the horse
- Hearing people questioning why the horse was behaving in a certain way, not just rushing in to “fix” things
- Seeing people searching for more genuine and authentic connections with their horses
- Witnessing that connection with so many combinations throughout the weekend - in all the competitions and in all the disciplines!
- The upsurge in the liberty ridden and unridden competition, and specifically the acceptance that it’s more beautiful when it is genuinely involving choice. Which means it’s okay when your horse leaves or doesn’t perform perfectly. The best bit is when the conversation is mutual!
- Feeling the gap between separation of disciplines, and training methods, closing around the banner of HORSE FIRST!!!

But mostly I feel gratitude to the horse and our world. We are all so lucky to fall under the category of “Horseperson”. I personally think there will be a gene isolated soon that will answer the question we all feel… Why? Why are we so drawn to these particular four legged creatures? But I digress….

GO HORSEWORLD!!! Go all of us!

Hopefully we will all feel more inspired, now, to share what we learn, share our passions and our journeys. Horse at the Center, egos at the back. I think I do, but, hmmmm, we will see how I feel tomorrow.

Sweetest project pony ever.

Moose, 13.3 hh stocky true crossbred gelding.
Jumping bloodlines on both sides of his breeding. Lone Arrow and Mokau. Has dilute Andalusian blood as well.

Moose has been under saddle for a few months.
Can walk trot and canter out on treks. Leads the way or is happy anywhere in the group. Forward and keen, but not rushy. Very green still, so will need more mileage, but confident as at this stage.
He has not started serious schooling yet, but is relaxed over poles and has free jumped.

He was started bitless, but is becoming comfortable with the bit now.

Floats loads happily.
Drenches easily.
Is getting used to hosing.
Is good with his feet, but has not had or needed shoes. He has been ridden on various terrains and has not been tender.
He had his teeth done as a youngster, but not recently.

Really one of the sweetest ponies I’ve had. He has some vulnerability about him, though, so will only go to exactly the perfect home to bring him on. Not for beginners, thank you. Low yellow 💛

Please feel free to ring and discuss. Or pm me.

Pony’s first ride.

So this little mare came to us, 3 years ago when we first went to pick her up with her mother and her brother. She was unhandled very flighty 3 year old.

We have a unique opportunity here to work with a lot of unhandled and feral horses, which brings some problems….but soooo many opportunities for learning!

Anyway, three years later, she’s had a foal. She’s been part of a few different herds, gotten all the other normal things of life here, moving, trucks, tractors and motorbikes, all your health stuff and basic training. Now she is ready for the big step….. drum roll…… backing!

I have my son Ben helping. I like to back horses with another person to help, when I can. I think horses prefer the group dynamics.

All the good things we’ve done together, all the mistakes, all the things her personality and natural disposition bring, and countless other things come together for this moment. Let’s see how it goes.

If you have any questions, I’ll answer if I can.

Jules horsing it like a pro!

A nearly 5 minute video, this shows how well things can go sometimes.

Third time haltered
First time led out of the yard
First lead down the road
First time led out of the back of a car!

For those of you who are interested in my training thoughts:
I chose to put Jules up the crush for her first real training, because although she was friendly and liked scratches when free, once she felt like maybe something was “happening”, she felt less secure.

The crush can give a horse security and protection, like a compression blanket, almost, but only if done in a specific way, and only if that is what the horse needs for comfort.
It doesn’t work well at all if it’s used to keep them still, or trap them, so we can get them “used” to touch or for desensitising.

Things to notice in the video.

- when I step up on the railing next to the crush Jules immediately moves back to be close to me. I was super stoked with that. I didn’t ask for it at all. She just must have come back because her memory from a few days before was positive. I had only handled her once there, previously, and while I thought it had gone well for her, that stepping back was such a nice surprise.
- I really like how she really leans into my hand for the scratches and rubs she gets. So nice.
- I love how the other horses in the yard are so engaged with the process. They are not tied up and the yards have lots of other places for them to be. I very often find horse hang around closely when I’m working with their friends.
- I do a lot of waiting for the moment to be right for her before progressing with things, like the haltering moment for instance. I’m not asking for her to turn in to me, I’m just telling her what the plan is and waiting for her to soften in on her own. This was the third time she’s been haltered, ever, and the first time was over nine months ago. Obviously, I was so happy that she was so comfortable with it!
- After she is haltered there is a super cute cuddly moment, then I do one of the most important things I do to prepare horses for leading. I just move her head a little side to side with her following my feel. All animals naturally follow feel. Sometimes we can forget to do this important step, just quietly showing them that they can understand our feel, before we ask them with the halter, and then we end up with some kind of tension or resistance, that we didn’t need.
- I’m also really happy with how beautifully and softly she backed out of the crush. I have left in the single point of resistance of the whole day, a little bit of confusion about backing after she was clear of the yards. I’m happy with how she handled it and how fast she recovered and stayed super present. Understanding that things aren’t always perfect, and being able to cope with that is soooo important for horses. Things will be hard sometimes.

The trip down the road was very successful. Lots of cars, trucks, campers and the school bus went by, all the horses handled it all perfectly. Looking forward to working with Mia more now.

You know when things just go right?

The job was: get two nearly completely unhandled mares from a huge paddock on a hill, up a dirt road to a set of yards so they can get handled and leading. Should take some time… Maybe an hour?

I have made this 6 minute long video because it all just went sooooo right!

One mare has been scratched before and haltered once 5 months ago.

Watch for relaxation.

Getting some exposure!

Taking out young or inexperienced horses for a lead walk can be such a good way to let them explore the world that they will need to be comfortable in with you on their back later.

Better be prepared to get your feet wet though or they will also think puddles and mud should be avoided.

I have a whole train of thought around bonding like part of the herd, and this stuff fits right in… adventure on together!!!!

It’s also just super nice to take a walk in the bush.

It's time again for a tiny (4.8 cm lenght) but absolutely gorgeous IceAge masterpiece from the Swabian Jura - a horse carved in mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago - the oldest known sculpture of a horse!

I had quite a lot of interest in Cruz.
I’m super happy with the home that he is going to.
We made this little video up to help prospective buyers get a little feel for him and what he is like.

Thought I’d share it cause it’s pretty cute of him.

Obviously to sell a horse, you have to show off their good points, but whenever we sell a horse we are trying to match the horse to their home as the
horse really is. I feel it’s very important to talk through, with anyone who is interested in them, ALL of their quirks and “interesting” things. It’s important so that the horse can keep on developing, and have a genuinely happy and engaged life with their humans.

Because of that wish, I’ve had a lot of lovely conversations, with a lot of lovely people, over the last week, or so. Thank you for that opportunity, and good luck finding your dream horses!

This BEAUTIFUL BOY HAS SOLD

15.2hh stationbred trekker

8 years old

Cruz is real sweetheart, with curves to die for.
He loves bush bashing, swimming, chilling and people.

He’s always waiting at the gate, and ready to go on a mission.
He’s great out alone, or in company. Happy anywhere in a group.
Maybe he’s bombproof. I’m not sure what he does if he gets a fright, because I haven’t seen him get one yet, and he’s been with us for 6 months.

Used to dogs, motorbikes, pigs, cows, horses, explosions (long story). Excellent to float, drench and shoe.

Although he's had beginners ride him and he’s been impeccable, I am looking for an experienced horse home, as he needs to be out doing exciting things, and has a good deal of personality.
Ideal farm hack, or a happy trekker.
I think Cruz could easily be developed into a great cowboy challenge horse, pig hunter or serious stockman’s mount.

This horse is a real “people person”. He loves a cuddle, will listen patiently for a deep and meaningful, and is happy to just go out and get the job done.

Looking for the right home, so open to reasonable offers. Lower 🟡

This guy is still here, and so are a few others.
I’ll pop up individual posts about others over the next few days.
All have had quiet, diligent, handling, are fluffy and wintery, but ready for the next step.
All will mature under 14.2.
There are 5, one started. I will keep
two for my grandkids, the others I will only sell to well matched homes. Great projects.

Get in quick while he’s still ugly! ❤️Nikau❤️

Hahah seriously though… this little guy is very very cute in that goofy way, and will mature beautifully.

He is 2+yrs old, October 2020. He’s been quietly handled, and is generally a happy and suuuuper relaxed chap.

I’ve popped in a few photos of his grandmother, mother, and three photos of his possible sires, hahah! All of them are beautifully bred warmbloods or warm blood crosses, from impeccable jumping bloodlines.

There is a little handling video in the comments.

I have also his mother’s first time ridden video to showcase her beautiful disposition.

Will mature to close to full height, and his breeding doesn’t suggest he should go over that.

Open to offers from the right home. 💚

Love the intensity of this guy as he…

“boldly goes where no horse has gone before”……

In his mind anyway… he is Cruz. I love riding out looking between his ears.

He really strides off into the unknown. I love the balance of helping him find his own natural bravery, and then going along for the ride, trusting that he’s got this ❤️

Kinda sounds cheesy when I read back over this… but actually… that’s what it’s like, and I do love it!! So, yeah
