Late change of plans. Sad news for those wanting to catch up with our MP and cabinet minister Matt Doocey this evening at the opening. Another more pressing engagement has forced him to cancel at late notice for the opening this evening. We are still honoured to have the Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon who will now attend and do the official duties.
The weather still looks Ok by 7pm so looking forward to seeing you all here tonight for the tour. Have a great day, Nick

Update: Great news. Woodend school is fundraising for a fantastic new playground and have kindly offered to supply the bbq. Thanks so much. Coffee cart also now sorted. Thanks
Hi all,
I need some local recommendations please.
Our new clinic at 8 Hinge lane Ravenswood shoud be open on the 4th March.
I am planning to have an "official" opening BBQ and coffee cart on the 15th March when people can have a look around the new clinic. Are there any recommendations for someone to run a BBQ and someone else for coffee and soft drinks as people have a look around the new clinic?
Would be great to have someone local but open to all suggestions. Thanks Nick

A little call out for help please. We are again short on newspaper to line our kennels and cat cages. We have been to the reuse store a couple of times in the last week and nothing there. Does anyone have bundled flat newspapers that can be donated to us please? Thanks again

Just some prior warning, a hot weekend coming up. Please remember pets die in hot cars, even with the windows open a little and in minutes. Please be careful.
As an aside, I (Nick) need to give my children some family time this school holidays. As we have other staff on holiday I will be sending all weekend after-hours to Christchurch after-hours clinic while we have a weekend together. Take care, Nick

Grass seeds are back!
When walking, it is important to check feet and coat for caught seeds and, if possible, avoid areas with long grass.
These seeds can work into feet, armpits and down ear canals causing pain and discomfort. Avoidance is the best solution but do give us a call with sudden onset ear discomfort or swelling between the toes as shown.

Worming. Not the most interesting topic at first, but I read an interesting article yesterday about human health and worming. Based on surveys of vets, farmers and the general public, it would seem we are exposing ourselves to dog and cat worms, So what? Well with young children and immunosuppressed adults there some health issues best avoided. These range from an increase in asthma right through to more serious learning issues. Apparently poorly diagnosed as well, as symptoms early on can be a simple fever, sore tummy and wheezing. With adult female worms shedding 200000 eggs per day for 42 days the article made some good recommendations. Dogs and cats who go outside should be wormed 4 times a year. However, if your dog or cat is fed raw meat, are working or therapy dogs, are in contact with children under 5 or live with immunocompromised people then monthly worming is recommended.

Just in case you missed it, Sarah Heath is a leading behavioural expert who spoke with Kim Hill on Radio NZ about pain responses in our pets. Worth a listen if you missed it.

How do we know when our cats and dogs are in pain? And how does pain affect their behaviour? These are among the topics being explored by Dr Sarah Heath, keynote speaker at next weekend's Kiwi Vet Behaviour Conference. Dr Heath is a UK-based veterinary specialist recognised for helping establish Beh...

Just a heads up to check the vaccination status of your dogs. Once again cases of Canine cough have been reported in Rangiora and we are now seeing the odd case in Woodend. Please be aware this disease can spread via shared water bowls as well as via droplets in the air.

For the community of Woodend, for some time now, we have had water supplied in a chlorinated form. It appears the Waimakariri District Council is trying to get an exemption for us, but this is taking some time. To all of the goldfish owners another warning however. Chlorine is not the only change it appears, and testing the water through our taps, it tests more alkaline than we were used to. This is particularly important when changing water for Goldfish tanks. So take care Goldfish owners

Autumn is here. As I often mention, it is good practice to worm your adult dogs and cats at least 4 times a year. The change in season is a good reminder. As an added bonus, the kind people at Virbac have given us some Easter eggs to give away. So while stocks last, a tasty treat for you while giving a tasty Milpro wormer for your pets!

There have been some reports of sudden death in rabbits in our area. Please check your pet rabbits are up to date for their vaccines as this sounds like rabbit calicivirus spreading. Take care.

Yes, we are still open today. It would appear the traffic plan has changed. The green arrows heading north are now only for cyclists! So please follow the main diversion to the ravenswood roundabout and accesss the southbound lane from there. Sorry for the inconvenience.

17/01/2023

Woodend town centre is not closing on the 25th January! Strange comment, but on the 25th of January MainPower is going to do some maintenance work on three power poles. Part of this means they will be closing the State highway to northbound traffic through the business area of Woodend. Southbound traffic will continue as usual.
This is not great news for us at PAWS Vets, (nor other town businesses) but many businesses have managed to hire large generators and have been assured that you, our customers, will be allowed access to us all from the north.
I have asked MainPower for a better traffic map, however, from the south they ask that you pass the diversion down Woodend Rangiora road and instead turn left into School Road, Right into Gibbs Drive and follow that to Woodend Road. Then turn right into Woodend Road and again you will be allowed to turn right onto the State Highway to get to us.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience. Be assured we will still be offering the full service you expect from us at PAWS Vets.

A real scorcher coming tomorrow. Please remember those iceblocks in water bowls, sprinklers, play pools and a cool place for your pets to retreat to. I also got a reminder of bunt pads on the feet of cats and dogs too. If it is too hot for your bare hands and feet, then chances are they could get burnt feet too! Perhaps time those walks in the early morning and after the day has cooled significantly.
Of course please do not leave your pets in the car, even if the windows are rolled down. NZ SPCA reports "When it's 21°C outside, temperatures in a car parked in the shade with the windows down can exceed 31°C in less than ten minutes. In 30 minutes, it goes up to 40°C. On a hot day, the temperature inside the vehicle can exceed 50°C." This is fatal in a very short time. So take care in that heat.

Restocked again for now, thanks everyone.

Calling for bundled newspapers. If anyone knows of a newspaper deliverer who has bundled newspapers left over, we are running low. They are used to line kennels among other things so not the glossy ones please. Thanks so much.

Ready for the first day of summer on Thursday our old friends are back! The seeds below were freshly removed from a poor dog's ear today. This poor dog had just been swimming at Waikuku beach and went for a roll afterwards.
So, if possible, time to start avoiding the long grass areas and if not, please check between toes and skin folds/ears (even during the walk, they move fast in fur).

Please keep your pets and others in mind if you are going to let off fireworks. A good time to be community minded and let your neighbours know so they can keep their pets safe too, or better still, how about a public display. Waipara has a great one on Friday night.

Finally the weather is warming up, and with that we will see a rise in fleas on pets. To stop those Spring flea explosions now is a great time to deflea our cats and dogs.
I am also very aware of cost of living going up. Each time I walk down the supermarket vege lane this becomes even more obvious, so we at PAWS Vets thought it helpful to have a promotion that helps keep the cost of healthy eating down.
So for the month of September, while stocks last, we have purchased lots of interesting vegetable seeds to give away with the purchase of flea products.
Happy growing everyone.

Care again around Pegasus lake please. I see tests have shown up as positive but signs not put up yet. Remember dogs are more sensitive to these toxins than humans and so extra care with them.

A Rangiora vet has reported local cases of feline panleukopenia. In simple terms, this is similar to canine parvo in that it causes severe diarrhoea, low white blood counts and can be fatal. It is almost entirely preventable by vaccination. Please check your cat's vaccinations are up to date.

Feline infectious enteritis (FIE) is a disease caused by infection with feline parvovirus (FPV), also known as feline panleukopenia virus.

Hi all, It has been seven years since this was drawn to our attention, and I started to warn clients that not all fish oils were equal for their pets. Now yet another study to say oxidised oils are being sold to people (and for pets) and doing harm. What a shame the commerce commission said they were too busy to follow this up.
For those keen to get tested fish and Borage oil for their pets skin, consider COATEX oils. Made to drug company testing and specifications and stored in an impervious dispensor.

Great news. We have a new vet starting this month and so we are back to accepting new clients again. Sorry to those who could not switch to us. We were very conscious we needed to concentrate on looking after those clients we already cared for. Nick

As I sit winding down after another spell of evening call outs, I saw it is World Veterinarian day! I quite honestly did not know it existed! Anyway, the NZ veterinary association has asked for us to share this. I love the comments about the stressed vet worrying I am keeping people waiting (it so happens), the vet wondering if the test is the best way to spend limited funds and the after-hours at times keeping us up into the little hours of the night.
Watch if you want, it just gives a little insight into our lives.
Have a good weekend.

To those with an exemption for masks, please be kind, we still need you to wear a mask in our clinic. Please understand, and we can serve you outside, but I need to keep our staff safe as we will be at risk of closing if our staff get COVID and have to isolate. We are also in a confined space and cannot leave windows open as animals could escape.
It says this clearly on our door and our poor receptionist has been challenged several times this morning. Nick

Easter is clearly coming up soon. No, I have not been looking at a calendar, I know because there have been several potential chocolate poisoning cases treated here already over the last few days!
Please enjoy Easter but a reminder to keep those lovely treats well out of reach of our furry friends.

A great article in the Press today discussing the risks of toxic algae.
Interestingly their reports are based on a risk to human health, while dogs are much more sensitive, and worse news, drawn to the smell of the algae.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/timaru-herald/news/127874081/dogs-far-more-susceptible-to-risks-associated-with-presence-of-cyanobacteria-in-waterways
Please be careful out there and keep a watch on this site, but remember dogs are much more at risk.
https://www.lawa.org.nz/explore-data/swimming/

Numerous reports of dog deaths, or serious illness, have been reported to Environment Canterbury in the past 10 years after contact with algal mats in rivers, as it continues to warn the public about the toxic blooms.
