EARS BACK AND EPTIMUM ARRIVE AT WINGATUI

Trainer John Blackadder has arrived at Wingatui with his leading hopes, Ears Back and Eptimum for the meeting there tomorrow.

He arrived at 2.45 pm after a five and three quarter hour trip from his training base at Rangiora (North Canterbury).

"It was a little longer than normal as we had to drop
a horse off at Oamaru," said Blackadder.

"Both horses (Ears Back and Eptimum) have done well."

They went into a small outside enclosure at Wingatui, replicating their home arrangements.

"They are trained out of the paddock and do a lot of beach work," explained John.

This has really worked for Eptimum, who did not adapt to enclosed quarters in Hong Kong.

Ears Back is in the $100,000 final of the ODT Southern Mile series (1600m).

The 4yr-old mare has won qualifying races at Riccarton and Invercargill and four of her eight starts since she began racing in October.

Eptimum (Positive Signs + Print open 1200m) has won his last three starts at Riccarton, Wingatui and Invercargill.

Jasmine Fawcett, the Matamata jockey who has partnered both horses in their wins, has the mounts tomorrow.

"Jasmine has been called "my princess" and I understand we have the top strike rate for New Zealand," said Blackadder who
was accompanied to Wingatui by a team of assistants, including his grandson, Walter Brown and Henry Gillies.

Brown was in the Tall Blacks squad of 12, who beat Lebanon 106-91 at the TSB Arena in Wellington on Monday but he did not get court time.

The win qualified the Tall Blacks for the Fiba World Cup.

Gillies is a part-owner of Eptimum. John's wife, Sandra is also in the ownership of both horses.

ODT SOUTHERN MILE SERIES

Ears Back became the first dual winner of a qualifying race in the 2022- 2023 ODT Southern Mile series when successful at Ascot Park on Saturday.

There is one qualifying race remaining at Riccarton on Friday. The 16-horse field for the $100,000 final at Wingatui on March 4, is decided on points.

Ears Back is trained at Rangiora by John Blackadder.

Our girl Gilly placed 7th in the Betavet handicap 1200m

Eptimum won the Cruckshank Pryde Southland stakes 1400m

Ears back won the summer cup 1600m

WELL-TRAVELLED EPTIMUM WINS IN INVERCARGILL

Eptimum's journey in life has seen him race in three countries and at one stage he hadn't been ridden for 18 months.

He won the $40,000 Cruickshank Pryde Southland Stakes at Ascot Park on Saturday for Rangiora horseman John Blackadder.

Eptimum started his racing career as a 2-year-old with a fifth at Doomben, Brisbane, in April 2017.

Four more starts in Australia included three consecutive wins
as a 3-year-old at Ballarat, Bendigo and Moonee Valley. The Moonee Valley win was in the Group III Red Anchor Stakes.

Eptimum ran 12th in his last Australian start, the million dollar Group I Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day in November, 2017.

Eptimum raced in Hong Kong from April, 2018 to September, 2019, with the best results being two fourths in 19 starts.

The Snitzel 8-year-old gelding came to New Zealand and began racing for Blackadder in October 2021.

Saturday's victory was his sixth in New Zealand.

Rangiora trainer Henry Gillies is in the ownership of Eptimum.

"He didn't like the environment in Hong Kong ... and hadn't been ridden for 18 months when he came to John's," Gillies said.

Blackadder also won with Ears Back at Ascot Park on Saturday.

The team at Blackadder Racing join with other members of the racing fraternity in expressing their condolences to family members and associates in the tragic loss of the talented apprentice jockey, Megan Taylor, at the Ashburton Raceway today. Megan rode her first winner whilst working with John and Sandra. She showed dedication, love and passion for the industry and she’ll be a great loss to the racing community.
