Esme, a 2-year-old Bully, presented for parturition assistance. During initial whelping, she delivered five puppies: three alive and two deceased. Complications arose with the sixth puppy, which was significantly larger and became lodged in the birth canal, causing obstructed labor.๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿง‘โ€โš•๏ธShe was immediately rushed to the clinic for an emergency cesarean section (C-section). During the procedure, three deceased puppies were extracted, and the surgery was performed successfully.๐Ÿง‘โ€โš•๏ธ
Esme is now recovering well post-surgery and is under observation for any potential postoperative complications. Further monitoring and follow-up care are recommended to ensure her complete recovery and to address the neonatal care of the surviving puppies. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

Treatment is surgical to allow drainage. After draining and flushing, several mattress sutures can be placed to eliminate the "pocket." A short course of a low anti-inflammatory dose is commonly added to this treatment. Addressing the underlying problem is important to prevent recurrence.๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿถ

We have recently encountered two separate cases of canine distemper virus (CDV), diagnosed merely 10 days apart. The unfortunate similarity in these cases is that both patients were unvaccinated against this virus.

Canine distemper is a highly infectious, multi-systemic, viral disease of dogs that occurs worldwide. Dogs commonly exhibit systemic clinical signs (fever, lethargy, loss of appetite), respiratory signs (nasal discharge, pneumonia), and GI signs (diarrhea), variably followed by neurologic signs (muscle twitching, focal or generalized seizures), which may be delayed. Vaccination is available and is generally effective.

Treatment is primarily supportive. The patient's own immune response is necessary to resolve the infection. Among survivors, full recovery from respiratory and GI signs is expected; however, the neurologic prognosis is unpredictable.๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฉบ
