A 3-y/o Male Shih Tzu named "Cody" was brought to the clinic due to Canine Transmissible Venereal Tumor (TVT) infection.

What is Transmissible Venereal Tumor (TVT)?
Transmissible venereal tumors are a highly unusual form of cancer in dogs. Cancer is a general term for uncontrolled cell growth which leads to the development of abnormal masses of tissue called tumors. Most forms of cancer arise spontaneously from within the body. Transmissible venereal tumors are contagious and spread between dogs through coitus, which is remarkably different from other forms of tumor development.

WHY SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS?

Spaying and neutering pets prevent infections, uterine infections in females, enlarged prostate glands in males.

Potentially serious diseases are also reduced. Spayed females have reduced risk of breast cancer while neutered males are no longer at risk of testicular cancer.

We also do our part in preventing the birth of unplanned pregnancies or overpopulation, and any stray animals that pose a great risk to both human and animal lives (RABIES).

Spaying and neutering decreases certain s*x hormones. This reduces behaviors that are frustrating to pet owners - breeding instincts, roaming, urine-/territorial-marking.

Have your pets spayed and neutered. They generally live longer, healthier lives!

For more info regarding spaying and neutering, please visit your vet.

Heli, A 6-month-old female Golden Retriever was referred to our clinic because of total fracture of the left femoral head from the femur due to car accident. After thorough examination of Heli's case, she was subjected for a Femoral Head and Neck Ostectomy.

What is a femoral head and neck ostectomy?

The hip is a ball and socket joint, with the femoral head (the upper part of the leg) being the ball and the acetabulum (a portion of the pelvis) comprising the socket. Femoral head and neck ostectomy (FHO) is a surgical procedure in which the ball portion and the attachment (neck) portion are removed from the rest of the femur, which in essence removes the hip joint. The body forms a “new hip” in the months following surgery. But unlike the normal contact of bone and cartilage, the new hip is a collection of scar tissue with additional support from the surrounding muscles and joint capsule.

What is the post-operative care?

In contrast to many other orthopedic surgeries, early use of the leg after surgery is important to allow for the best possible outcome. In many pets, this will require owners to perform physical therapy, utilizing techniques such as range of motion exercises and swimming. Physical therapy is started as soon as pets will allow, usually after suture removal, seven to 10 days post-surgery.

"Xiaomai", a 4-year-old female Shih tzu was presented in the clinic with enlarged abdomen, no appetite and lethargic. Blood tests were conducted as well as x-ray to confirm diagnosis and was positive for closed pyometra. After confirming the case, the patient had an emergency surgery.

What is Pyometra?
~Pyometra is caused by a bacterial infection which is characterized by the accumulation of purulent or mucopurulent exudate in the uterus. It is usually seen in older, female dogs who haven’t been neutered predisposed by hormonal imbalance and can happen in any un-spayed bi***es of any age.
What are the symptoms?
~ Early signs may not always be obvious but your pet may be off their food, lethargic, or very thirsty. Sometimes pets have discharge from their va**na but not in all cases. As the infection gets worse your pet may be sick and become very unwilling to move.
How is Pyometra treated?
~ A pyometra is a serious infection and requires urgent surgery to remove the infected womb.
How can I stop my dog getting a Pyometra?
~ About one in four older female dogs will suffer from pyometra but it can be totally prevented or avoided by having your pet spayed. It is suggested that removal of ovaries and uterus begin as early as 8 months old or before the first heat period if fur-parent desires not to breed her/his female pet.
