NO PETS LEFT BEHIND

β€œAnimals depend on us humans for their survivalβ€”let’s not fail them by extending our compassion and consideration in these difficult times,” saad ng PAWS.

Scientists Confirm β€” There's a Simple Way to Communicate With Your Cat:

If your cat seems distant, it may be that you’re not communicating in a way they understand.

A study published in Scientific Reports offers a simple solution: smile the cat wayβ€”by slowly blinking.

Researchers from the University of Sussex found that narrowing your eyes and giving a slow blink can make cats, even those unfamiliar to you, more likely to approach and engage. This behavior mimics the relaxed, half-closed-eye expression cats use when content, helping to build trust and connection.

The researchers conducted two experiments to explore this interaction. In the first, cat owners slow-blinked at their pets, and the cats were more likely to return the gesture compared to when no interaction occurred. In the second experiment, researchers (who were strangers to the cats) performed the same slow-blink and found that not only did the cats blink back, but they were also more likely to approach an outstretched hand. This suggests that slow blinking serves as a bridge between human and feline communication, helping cats feel safe and comfortable with people.

Understanding how to communicate with cats could improve their emotional well-being, particularly in stressful environments like shelters or veterinary clinics. Cats often avoid direct eye contact, interpreting it as a threat, but the slow blink signals friendliness and openness. Psychologist Tasmin Humphrey explains that this insight into cat behavior could enhance public understanding and welfare for an often-misunderstood species. So next time you encounter a feline friend, try a slow blinkβ€”you might just spark a silent conversation.

Yes, Your Cat's Bowl May Be Harming Its Health:

Whisker fatigue, also known as whisker stress, is a condition that can occur when a cat's whiskers are repeatedly touched while eating or drinking.

This can happen when a cat eats from a bowl that's too deep or high-sided, causing the whiskers to brush against the sides. It's basically constantly getting sensory input.

Since a cat’s whiskers are packed with sensory receptors, this repetitive stimulation can lead to discomfort and even stress.

Cats experiencing whisker fatigue may become reluctant to eat, act fussy around their food, or pace nervously near their bowl. Switching to shallow, wide dishes can help alleviate this problem by allowing the whiskers to avoid unnecessary contact, ensuring a more comfortable mealtime for your feline friend.
