Case of the Day: ๐‘ถ๐’•๐’๐’…๐’†๐’„๐’•๐’†๐’” ๐’„๐’š๐’๐’๐’•๐’Š๐’” (Earmites) Earmites (๐˜–๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ค๐˜บ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ด) are ectoparasites that can be found on the ears of cats, dogs and some other animals. This parasite can not be seen by our naked eye since they are microscopic in nature. They can only be seen under a microscope. Animals can acquire this parasite through direct contact with infested animals and pets of any age can be affected. Earmite-infested animals presents varying clinical signs based on the severity of the problem but usually, they can be seen shaking their head, scratches their ears (accompanied by vocalization), alopecia or hair-loss on the ears, excessive grooming in cats, self-inflicted trauma or scratch wounds, flaking or crusting ears, dark oily discharge and smells even after they are showered. Some animals with severe infestation can have excessive lacrimation, sneezing with nasal discharge, aural hematoma and even problem with balance (problem has progressed from middle ear to inner ear). Earmites can be prevented OR treated. But take note: TO PREVENT IS STILL AND ALWAYS WILL BE BETTER THAN TO CURE. These problems can be go unnoticed so when you observe your pets to have either one or a couple of these clinical signs, please consult your nearest veterinarian.
