Let's talk about ear mites:
One of our patient have been diagnosed of ear mites infection today.
What are Ear Mites?
🐾 Ear mites, Otodectes cynotis, is a surface mite that lives on cats, dogs, rabbits, and ferrets. It is usually found in the ear canal but it can also live on the skin surface. Ear mites are highly contagious, and animals become infested by direct contact with another infested animal.
Signs of ear mites in pets:
●head shaking
●scratching at ears
●having red and inflamed ears caused by extra wax and irritation.
●producing a black, dry ear discharge which can sometimes let off a bad smell.
Dogs and cats cannot clean the inside of their own ears so it is important as a pet owner to regularly inspect them.
If you see material inside their ear that resembles dried up coffee grounds or other symptoms like listed above, make an appointment with your veterinarian to have them checked out.
If left untreated, ear mites can lead to deafness and imbalance problems.
