Did you know pets can get nosebleeds too? 🐾 A nosebleed in pets can happen for a variety of reasons—anything from dry air and allergies to more serious conditions like infections or trauma. If your fur baby has a nosebleed, it's important to stay calm and get them checked by a vet if the bleeding persists.

🦠 Amoebiasis 🦠 is a condition wherein there is an overpopulation of Entamoeba histolytica, a type of protozoa, in the gastrointestinal tract (there are other amoeba species but pathogenic enteric infections with amoeba are usually caused by this particular species). They compete with the host's (the patient's) body for nutrients, and destroy gastrointestinal cells as well.

Amoeba cysts, or amoeba "eggs", exist naturally and ubiquitously in the environment in stagnant waters and in the soil. When the host consumes these eggs, they mature, thrive, and reproduce in the gastrointestinal tract. These, in turn, produces the symptom of diarrhea in infected patients; since pain is also present, vomiting may also happen. Management of amoebiasis but other diseases, especially viral ones, must be ruled out

Diagnosis of amoebiasis is done by fecalysis, or simple light microscopy of fresh stool samples. Amoeba cysts appear as "chocolate chip cookie"-shaped circles.

Subcutaneous emphysema occurs usually due to trauma from the thoracic cavity resulting in the release of air from the lungs, but this can also happen due to fermentative processes from subcutaneous bacterial infection. This results into the separation of the connective tissues, forming a ballooning under the skin that 'crackles' upon touch.

In this case the patient is a mere two-hour old pupper, whose owner claimed was bloated (exact words being, "Doc, lumolobo siya.").

The puppy's littermates were apparently normal. The only clue that we had with this case was that the owners observed that the mother dog picked up this puppy using her mouth, clamping over to the mid section of the puppy.

Subcutaneous emphysema was confirmed when air was aspirated, and the air reinflated after a few moments, as seen in the video attached.

Management of non-septic subcutaneous emphysema include draining of the subcutanous air then proper bandaging to appose the separated tissue layers. The initial source of the subcutaneous emphysema, the thoracic cavity trauma that led to the release of air, must also be addressed.

Demodicosis (one type of mange or "galis") is a condition caused by overgrowth of mites known as Demodex sp.; these usually overpopulate in the skin due to a myriad of factors, such as weak skin, dry skin, immunocomprised system of the patient's body, etc.

This patient was presented with whole body itchiness, generalized alopecia, and hotspots. A skin scrape revealed presence of Demodex mites.

One good way to control demodicosis is to administer isoxazolines (some brands include Bravecto, Nexgard, and Simparica). One such tablet was prescribed to this poor furbaby, as well as some oral medications, and most importantly, medicated baths.

Allergies 🤧

Allergic reactions may come from different sources, like food, inhalants or noxious fumes, insect bites, or chemicals that may come into contact with the skin.

In this particular furbaby's case, there was hypersalivation, redness of skin, and increase in body temperature. Breathing was also rapid (though this might just be due to anxiety 😅). All these signs are consistent with allergic reactions.

Such cases are considered urgent, especially if the patient's breathing is visibly labored. Rush to the nearest vet to get antihistamine shots!

Cats are meant to be indoors

While they may experience enrichment and honing of their hunting instincts when goven access outdoors, it leaves them extremely vulnerable to risks, such as infections, infestations, starvation, dehydration, dog/cat fight traumas, and vehicular traumas. They can also serve as ecological pests, as they would be hunting local animals which can disrupt the ecosystem.

This mischievous furbaby had ran away from home, and two days later had presented with emaciation, extreme dehydration, and swollen head region dripping with pus, with the suspicion of being involved in a cat fight.

Cat owners, please be responsible and train our furbabies to stay at home. Spaying/neutering operations may help the process.

Sadly, hygiene for pets is a notion commonly neglected for pets. They, too, have to have regular toothbrushing and ear cleaning done at home to prevent diseases of the mouth and ears. Managing these diseases may prove to be laborious, and sometimes, expensive.

In this case, grumpy Molly is scratching her ears relentlessly 🥹 it turned out to be an external ear infection.

If you dog 🐶 or cat 😺 exhibits head swivelling, persistent ear or head scratching, has wounds present near the ears, has brown or slimy discharge in the ears, or has ear malodor, have them checked up!

This is Lucky the Shih Tzu, whose owner was slicing unripe mango 🥭 for their own snacks. The owner accidentally dropped a piece while preparing, and Lucky immediately snatched the piece. Unluckily (hehe), though, it became lodged in his throat.....

Lucky's owners were fast to respond, but, unluckily (hehe), they were unable to remove the obstruction, and thus came to our facility for help.

With a bit of anesthesia and some forceps, the mango 🥭 came loose.

As a pet owner, be wary whenever you prepare food. One chance they get, these furbabies may try to eat up those food ingredients, in which the scenario becomes more critical if the food stuff is actually toxic (e.g. raisins, onion, garlic, chocolate, etc.) or obstructive. We're not really pushing the blame to the owners 😄 all of us, the attending vet, the receptionist, the veterinary assistants and technicians, and the clients, were all kinda laughing after the resolution of the incident, which is SO ABSURD! Absurd, we tell you.

Treat these dogs and cats as toddlers who'll nibble on anything they find curious or tasty, and keep all those away from their reach.
