Bladder stones, also known as uroliths or cystic calculi, are mineral formations that develop in the urinary bladder. These formations occur when certain minerals in the body are not processed properly by the dog's urinary system, leading to crystallization at higher-than-normal levels in the urine. The resulting sharp crystals cause irritation to the bladder lining, prompting the production of mucus. Over time, these crystals and mucus combine to form clusters that gradually enlarge and harden into stones.
Various factors can impact this process, including urine pH, the presence of specific proteins in the urine, and the water content of the urine, which all play a role in stone formation. Dietary choices can also influence the urinary environment's pH, potentially predisposing the formation of crystals.
Additionally, bladder stones may develop due to underlying bladder diseases, such as bacterial infections, or issues related to the body's metabolism.
