This is an enlarged infected Uterus removed from one of our Shih Tzu mix patient.
Doggie came in with vaginal discharge, poor appetite and enrlaged abdomen. Upon examination, it was determined that patient had a condition called Pyometra.
Pyometra, is a secondary infection caused by hormonal changes in the female reproductive tract. These hormones stimulates the uterine walls to thicken. However, if pregnancy does not happen for several cycles, an infection will occur and the uterus will become enlarged, fill with fluids hence the discharges. It is usually life threatening, often needing emergency surgery.
However, once properly managed most patients will have a good outcome.
This patient is recovering well and will be due for her 2weeks post op check up soon.
So if you do not plan to breed your female pets, it is better to have them Spayed.
