Even though those like her are often unwanted by the Filipinos, Aspins still see the neighborhood as their sanctuary. They still trust us, Filipinos. Our book Dogs in Philippine History chronicled how Aspins endured mass killings since 1762. They have been fighting for their survival to this date.

Nevertheless, Philippine history is replete with stories of how Aspins were celebrated by our ancestors: Fr. Francisco Ignacio Alicina, SJ, for example, said in 1668 how our ancestors loved Aspins more than their own children; that dogs were being kissed, had their own sleeping blanket, and slept beside their family. It was incomparable anywhere in the world, Alcina said.

Aspins descended from the ancient hunting dogs whose earliest evidence of existence in the Philippines was in Palawan and Cagayan nearly 4,000 years ago. They are the companions of our epic heroes like Lam-ang of Ilocos and Datu Paiburong of the Panay Bukidnon, and the heavenly like the gods of Cordillera.

It is our ardent hope to have a stray-free Philippines society--not because they are all impounded and killed per law but because they all found a loving Filipino home. Help in controlling the stray population by supporting animal shelters and welfare groups. Adopt, don't shop.
