Philippine Forest Dog / Asong Gubat

Naturally bred by nature, they’ve been here in the Philippines for 36,000 years.

Unlike Asong Pinoys that we ubiquitously see in city streets and everywhere, Asong Gubat are only found in rural areas.

Their origin came from Bukidnon Province and they are mostly found in that locality.

Forest dogs have brindle haircoat (tiger-striped) and have bicolored iris (their eyes have 2 different colors), that’s why they are also called “Witch Dogs” & “Tiger Dogs”.

FYI, if a certain dog has a brindle haircoat, it doesn’t automatically mean that he/she is a Forest Dog.

Only experts can note these identifications. Research about their standard look has been going on for about 30 years now.

Asong Pinoy that are brindle are not Asong Gubat.

Asong Gubat are indigenous dogs that are naturally born hunters but are not wild dogs. They are considered “primitive dogs” instead. They use all their senses for survival.

Witch Dogs are headstrong, ruthless and independent. They are not used with people. They are not easily tamed because they are born and bred in the wild. It will take time to tame them just like what their tribal owners did.

They possessed very unique characteristics that can only be found in their lineage.
✅ They have very sharp claws that shed regularly. They are the only breed of dogs that shed its claws.
✅ When they see other breeds, they see them as a threat or prey.
✅ Compared to most domestic dogs, their ge****ls are less than half in diameter so they usually mate with their own kind.

With the Witch Dogs refusal to mate with other domestic dogs, they maintain the PUREST BLOODLINE.

The Philippine Forest Dogs are still in the process of recognition from the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) with the help of Philippine Canine Club Inc. (PCCI) which leads the campaign.

It’s still a long journey, they are currently in the DNA testing stage. The path to recognition requires a minimum of 15 years!

But for now, let us continue to support our very own Asong Gubat. Tangkilikin ang sariling atin♥️

Side Note:
Experts said that our Forest Dogs are better off remaining with their tribal owners or at least dog lovers living in rural, remote areas.
