Must READ
Recently, I’ve seen a lot of comments like “hala kawawa,” “Grabe kayo sa rabbit huhu” or “Ang tao talaga kahit ano na lang kinakain” whenever the topic of raising rabbits for meat comes up especially dito sa Pilipinas.
When I first started raising rabbits, I had the same questions and hesitations. But you know what changed my mind?
KNOWLEDGE.
I learned that rabbits were originally domesticated for meat. I learned how efficient they are compared to other livestock, requiring less space and resources while providing high-quality meat. Even their manure is one of the best organic fertilizers for the garden. I realized that almost every part of the rabbit is usable—their meat, fur, ears, feet, and even their organs—leaving little to no waste.
I also learned how to care for them properly, from breeding and handling to humane ways of dispatching. I discovered how to manage their needs in our tropical climate, handle tricky situations like grumpy does, and ensure successful litters during breeding seasons.
I chose to educate myself, and I continue to learn every day.
The truth is, many here in the Philippines still can’t accept the idea of rabbits being raised for meat. And I get it, change is hard. But before judging, I encourage everyone to take the time to learn.
The meat you buy in stores, nicely packaged and ready to cook, was once a living animal, too. The only difference is, you didn’t witness the process. That doesn’t make you better than those of us who choose to raise and harvest our own food.
I understand if you don’t want to live this way. It’s a personal choice, and we’re fortunate to have options. But looking down on others for how they provide for their families while hiding behind so-called “ethics” doesn’t make sense to me.
Let’s try to understand each other’s choices and respect the effort and responsibility that comes with raising and harvesting your own food. At the end of the day, it’s about sustainability, respect for the animals, and providing for our loved ones.
