Malasezzia Otitis

Otitis externa caused by Malassezia is typically associated with moderate pruritus, inflammation, and cerumen formation in the ear canal.

Diagnosis of Malassezia otitis externa is straightforward. Cytology of exudate collected from the ear canal should be performed.

Treatment of the secondary Malassezia otitis should include antifungal and glucocorticoid ingredients in most cases. The most common antifungal ingredients used in the treatment of Malassezia otitis externa are miconazole, clotrimazole and silver sulfadiazine.

If you notice your pets are exhibiting the signs listed below, bring them to the nearest veterinary clinic.
- scratching at the ears
- ear odor
- redness of ears
- head shaking
- pain upon touching the ears
- head tilting
- ear discharges

Ruptured Abscess Management in a Dog

This patient was brought to the clinic with a primary complaint of swelling on the left forearm. It was found to be an abscess (an accumulation of pus). Draining and flushing was done, however, after a few days the affected site was traumatized and started to necrotize, hence, wound debridement and surgical repair was done. Gladly, the owners were very diligent during post surgical wound cleaning and medication, the wound healed in a short time.
