🪨 Urolith Extraction

This is the urolith removed during the emergency cystotomy performed last night in a 27.8 kg dog.
• Weight: 5 grams
• Size: Approximately 2 inches
• Surface: Sharp and rough

Uroliths of this size and texture can cause significant pain, hematuria, and risk of urinary obstruction, making surgical intervention necessary.

This X-ray shows evidence of a bladder stone (urolith).

⚠️ Bladder stones can cause:
🔹 Pain and discomfort
🔹 Bloody urine
🔹 Difficulty of urination
🔹 Dangerous blockages if left untreated

💉 This patient is scheduled for an emergency cystotomy surgery tonight to remove the stone and relieve discomfort.

🥤 Hydration is the key – Always provide clean, fresh water. Staying hydrated helps dilute urine and reduce stone formation.
🍲 Proper diet – Avoid giving too much salty, fatty, or human food. Some commercial dog foods are high in minerals that may contribute to stone formation. Ask your vet about prescription diets designed to prevent uroliths.
🕒 Regular check-ups – Routine vet visits and urinalysis can detect issues early, before stones grow large.

👉 While prevention can help, only a veterinarian can diagnose and treat uroliths properly.

🆘 AWARENESS POST – COMPOUND UROLITH IN DOGS 🐶🩺

Today, a 5-year-old female dog had surgery to remove a compound urolith—a large urinary stone formed from layers of minerals inside her bladder. What you see in the photo is the actual stone removed during the procedure. It’s painful, dangerous, and preventable. 💔

🔬 What is a compound urolith and how does it form?
Urinary stones develop when minerals in the urine stick together and crystallize. Over time, these crystals can clump and form hard, layered stones in the bladder or urinary tract.
Factors that can contribute include:
✅ Poor hydration
✅ Urinary tract infections
✅ Certain diets
✅ Genetics or breed predisposition
✅ Abnormal urine pH levels

🐾 Take action early!
If your dog shows any of these signs, consult your vet as soon as possible. Early detection can prevent pain, infection, and the need for surgery.

Let’s raise awareness—urinary stones are painful, but they’re preventable with the right care and early attention. 💙🐾
