What does the journey of a coffee seed look like? ๐ฑ
Coffee starts with a seedโbut before they get to farmers fields, these tiny, yet essential pieces of the coffee value chain change hands several times.
They typically originate from seed lots, which are small plots where coffee trees dedicated to producing seeds of one variety are grown. There may be several seed lots contained within one farm. In general, farms do not produce exclusively seed, as most are designed for regular coffee production.
Next, seeds enter nurseries. Nurseries are typically privately owned and buy seed, grow it into seedlings, and sell those to producers, who then plant the seedlings to grow into trees on their fields.
