A blood transfusion is a medical procedure used in dogs to treat symptoms of anemia and severe bleeding caused by disease, surgery, toxicity, or trauma. The goal of blood transfusion is to treat symptoms caused by anemia by replacing RBCs so that proper oxygenation of organs can occur.

Below is a successful blood transfusion performed by one of our experienced veterinarians. Olivia, the patient, was monitored for several hours and ensured that she is stable.

Pyometra may occur in any sexually intact young to middle aged to older dogs. After many years of estrous cycles without pregnancy, the uterine wall undergoes the changes that promote this disease. Pyometra usuallt occurs 2 to 8 weeks after the last estrus (heat cycle.

Clinical signes depend on whether or not the cervix remains open. If it is open, pus will drain from the uterus through the va**na to the outside.

Fever, lethargy, anorexia and depression may or may not be present. The bacteria release toxins that are absorbed into the bloodstream. Toxins affect the kidney's ability to retail fluid resulting to too much drinking of water.

Pyometra is a serious bacterial infection of the uterus. The treatment for this is to surgically remove the infected uterus and ovaries.

Bladder stones are rock-like formations of minerals that develop in the urinary bladder. There may be a large, single stone or a collection of stones that range in size from sand-like grains to gravel. Many times, there is a mixture of both large and small stones present.

2 female cat presented in our clinic developed a large single to multiple stones in their bladder. Signs and symptoms are difficulty urinating, bloody urine and weakness. Surgical intervention was then made to save the 2 cats from deteriorating and from further damage to the walls of the bladder.

This year’s World Rabies Day theme is: “Rabies: Facts, not fear”.

Why this theme?

The global COVID-19 pandemic has raised many doubts and misconceptions about diseases, their spread and about vaccination in general. Because of this, there has been some hesitancy about the roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccines in many countries and many people are afraid to get vaccinated. For rabies, this is nothing new, as fears, misconceptions and misinformation about the disease and its prevention dates back hundreds of years. For that reason, this year’s theme is focused on sharing facts about rabies, and not spreading fear about the disease by relying on misinformation and myths.
