"Uno, the dog on the picture was actually adopted after a disaster our family had to go through. We witnessed and experienced firsthand how depression could take lives. My brother had depression since high school and we went to different psychologists and therapists thoughout the years. Unfortunately, even with the greatest efforts of the family, things did not fall into place. On November 17, 2019, depression took his life and it felt like the whole world crashed for us knowing that we lost a family member. Weeks after his passing, we got Uno, the angel that saved our mental health, the angel that brought light again to the family. It felt like he knew what we were going through and is willingly helping. Yes, dogs may be troublesome and messy at times but the happiness and hope they bring is priceless."

"2017 was the year I was clinically diagnosed with major depressive disorder with mixed emotional features and anxiety disorders. There were times that I don't want to do anything, not because I am lazy but I have lost the will to live. I lose interest with the things that I love before and I have been experiencing panic attacks without any triggers. Ever since I was a child, I have always been an animal lover. I had a lot of pets but there is one pet (Trixie, a toy poodle) that has been my best friend for 10 years. She's been with me through the hardest times of my life, but unfortunately, she died last 2014. I can still remember clearly how I felt about losing her and I told myself that I would not take care of any other animals because I was afraid that I might experience the same pain when Trixie died. But when a friend of mine encourage me to adopt a cat last 2018 and she said that cats are very independent, I can easily take good care of it. I was hesitant at first and really took my time to think about it. And then year 2019, I have finally decided that I will get a cat and lo and behold, my panic attacks were lessen and I am much happier being with my cats. It started with 1 cat, now I have a total of 6 cats. Being with them makes me feel l am in heaven. I can't even leave my house because I don't want to be away from them. Although I'm still getting my psychotherapies and counseling until now, I believe that my pets are really helping me overcome this mental illness. There were times that I get nightmares and my cats were surprisingly waking me up by meowing loudly, as if they know what is happening with me. Now that I have pets and don't want to experience the same pain when Trixie died, I took my chance and study Doctor of Veterinary Medicine so that I could take good care of my pets, as well as other animals because I know how it feel to lose a pet that we considered as a family."

One of the main people behind National Congress of Veterinary Medicine Students (NCVMS) is none other than their national director (in which he calls himself as “marupok na vet”on twitter), Mr. John Louis Gonzales. This charming student leader and crush ng bayan has a sterling political track record from being a Lasallian Youth Volunteer(2018), to being a USC councilor(2019), to lobbying for his mandate against admins from different schools(2020), and is now campaigning for which garnered international recognition. He is also the National Convenor for Student Aid Network, an allied network of National Union of Students of the Philippines. He is very progressive which is why we love him so much!

I’m not sure if he can remember this, but he left a mark on me when we personally worked together in the University Student Council. All I can say is, “Strong itong batang ‘to.” When everyone else reneged during the battle against tuition fee increase because of the risk for academic backlash, threat, and/or expulsion, he soldiered on and stayed with the campaign til the very end. The campaign won.

campaign made it to international attention all because of the precursory efforts of National Congress of Veterinary Medicine Students (NCVMS), UP College of Veterinary Medicine Student, and several other vet student organizations.

This was a call to Commission on Higher Education(CHED) and the rest of the medical sectors to recognize veterinary medicine as medicine.

Discrimination between vetmed courses and other medical courses became more apparent when CHED hastily announced the conducting of face-to-face classes only for selected practical courses such as but not limited to; human med schools, in which time and time again, have excluded veterinary educational institutions.

NVCMS and the rest of vet student councils & vet organizations lobbied against this because our government and society has yet again failed to acknowledge that veterinarians and vet technicians are of public health importance because they help prevent zoonotic diseases (diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans), help conduct research involving human-animal trials, secure meat/food safety, and many more. Covid-19 pandemic is also allegedly a zoonotic disease.

NCVMS also called out school administrations to protect their mandate, which is why they are strikingly politically involved and they are not stopping any moment!

Here are several points that they are demanding:
1. Recognize that veterinary medicine is medicine
2. Implement academic ease
3. Guarantee pro-student and pro-faculty representation
4. Re-evaluate academic policies & prioritize internship, medicine, and surgery subjects
5. Provide transparency on budget for Covid-19 in veterinary educational institutions.
