Here are four diseases transmitted by ticks and fleas that dog owners should be aware of:
1. Lyme Disease
Cause : Bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted by tick bites, particularly by the black-legged tick (deer tick).
Symptoms : Fever, lameness, swollen joints, fatigue, and loss of appetite.
2. Anaplasmosis
Causes : Bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophilum, transmitted by tick bites.
Symptoms : Lethargy, fever, joint pain, and sometimes vomiting.
3. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF)
Cause : Bacteria Rickettsia rickettsii, transmitted by various types of ticks.
Symptoms. : Fever, loss of appetite, swollen lymph nodes, joint pain, and sometimes neurological symptoms.
4. Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD)
Cause : Allergic reaction to flea saliva when bitten.
Symptoms : Intense itching, red and irritated skin, hair loss, and sores from scratching.

Being vigilant and using preventive measures can significantly reduce your dog’s risk of contracting these diseases. Regular check-ups with a vet are also essential for early detection and treatment.
