Tubifex worm 🐛

Tubifex worms are often used as live food for fishes, especially for tropical fishes and certain other freshwater species. They have been popular food for the aquarium trade.

Benefits of Tubifex worms, cultured in aquarium or fish pond water :

• These worms 🐛 help to control the bacteria which are harmful for the fishes.
• They also reduce nitrate by eating fish wastes.
• They help to maintain the ecosystem of your aquarium or fish pond.

How to culture tubifex worm?

i) You have to take a water holding container of some good height (like tub, plastic bucket, glass fish tank, etc).
ii) At least 6 to 7 hours a day continuous mild water flow needs to be maintained in the container, with a suitable drainage system.
iii) After the arrangement of the system, the container is inoculated with Tubifex worms which you can obtain from nearby rice fields, muddy canals or sewage canals.
iv) Wash at least 5 times with clean water for disinfecting the worms.
v) After cleaning, put the starter in the container and within 15 days, clusters of worms will develop.

Best food for tubifex for good results:

• Sinking fish food
• Rice bran
• Floating pallets (Soak the floating pallets into water and make them sink in the water and then you can feed these to them.)
• Dried Cow dung
• Oil cake
• Fish meal
• Spirulina tablet
• Fish food flakes
• Bread
• Spinach
• Boiled vegetables like carrots, cucumber and cabbage, etc.

Feed them 4 to 5 times in a week.

Brine shrimp egg is sometimes very buoyant. In order to maximize the hatching percentage, it is sometimes helpful to swirl the water inside the hatching container with your finger once or twice at intervals in the first 4 to 6 hours of incubation in order to knock down eggs that have been stranded on the side of the container above the water-line. After about 6 hours, the eggs are usually well-hydrated and will stay in the water column.
