Five budgerigars in the same breeding facility died or showed ruffled feathers. To determine the cause, five dead or euthanized budgerigars were examined. Splenomegaly was observed at necropsy in all birds examined. Histopathology of the spleen revealed a slight-to-moderate deletion of lymphocytes a...

Q: How often do birds molt?
A: It depends! Most birds molt annually, some twice a year, while others molt every other year. Molting is affected by light cycles, hormones, nutrition, stress, life stage, and dermatologic factors.

Breeding condition is a prerequisite for successful breeding. The best results are seen when the breeding condition of each s*x is synchronous. Informed breeding management systems introduce the pairs to mimic the wild bird situation. Poor results should be expected when the hen in "breeding condition" is not introduced to the c**k or nest on time.

Currumbin Valley Birds, Reptiles & Exotics Vet

We see many pet birds with inappropriate wing trims. Typically the wings have been “hacked off”, too short to prevent their pet from flying away. If birds’ wings are cut so short that they cannot fly , they suffer physical damage from “crash landing “ and new, growing blood feathers are also damaged because they are unprotected by longer, stiffer feathers. Check out our website www.currumbinvetservices.com.au and read our articles “Pet Parrots and Wing trimming” and “Problems Caused by Inappropriate wing trims”. This young Quaker parrot needed feather extensions to correct a “hacked off” wing trim. The extensions enable her to fly and to prevent physical damage from “crash landings”.

Feather growth

Fascinating as it is, but how is the process of feather growth?

Each new feather grows from a small outgrowth of skin called the papilla.
As feathers mature, their tips get pushed away from the papilla, where the newest parts of the feather form. Like human hair, feathers are youngest at their base.
The feather’s structure develops as proteins are laid down around the surface of this bump of skin. It’s here that the branching patterns form by smaller branches fusing at the base to make thicker ones—barbules
fuse into barbs
and barbs fuse into a rachis

As the feather grows, it stays curled in a tubular shape around the papilla until it is pushed away from the growth area.
A protective sheath maintains the feather’s cylindrical shape until it starts to disintegrate near the tip, allowing the mature part of the feather to unfurl.
The sheath falls off and the growth process is complete.

NE Budgies

Couldn’t resist seeing how these little guys were progressing. Spangles are such a handy bird, if they are from the right
Background. I saw the first spangles bred in Germany from the birds Rolf Christian took from Australia to Switzerland. Joe and Reinhard Brought them from Rolf and put them to the best birds they had and the the budgie world is still benefiting from their efforts.

Does anybody know if Rolf is still about, he was living on the north Shore in Sydney.

Sorry for getting off track, yes I think these spangles are going to be very handy if I can get them to the breeding pen.
