Feline panleukopenia (FP) is a highly contagious viral disease of cats caused by the feline parvovirus. Kittens are most severely affected by the virus. The names feline distemper and feline parvo should not be confused with canine distemper or canine parvoโ although their names are similar, they are caused by different viruses. The viruses do not infect people.
The feline parvovirus infects and kills cells that are rapidly growing and dividing, such as those in the bone marrow, intestines, and the developing fetus.
Because the FP virus is everywhere in the environment, virtually all kittens and cats are exposed to the virus at some point in their lives. While cats of any age may be infected with the feline parvovirus that causes FP, young kittens, sick cats, and unvaccinated cats are most susceptible. It is most commonly seen in cats 3-5 months of age; death from FP is more common at this age.
The virus has appeared in all parts of the United States and most countries of the world. Kennels, pet shops, animal shelters, unvaccinated feral cat colonies, and other areas where groups of cats are housed together appear to be the main reservoirs of FP. During the warm months, urban areas are likely to see outbreaks of FP because cats are more likely to come in contact with other cats.
Cats can shed the virus in their urine, stool, and nasal secretions; infection occurs when susceptible cats come in contact with these secretions, or even the fleas from infected cats. An infected cat tends to shed the virus for a relatively short period of time (1-2 days), but the virus can survive for up to a year in the environment, so cats may become infected without ever coming into direct contact with an infected cat. Bedding, cages, food dishes, and the hands or clothing of people who handle the infected cat may harbor the virus and transmit it to other cats. It is, therefore, very important to isolate infected cats. Any materials used on or for infected cats should not be used or allowed to come in contact with other cats, and people handling infected cats should practice proper hygiene to prevent spreading the infection.
The virus that causes FP is difficult to destroy and resistant to many disinfectants. Ideally, unvaccinated cats should not be allowed into an area where an infected cat has been โ even if the area has been disinfected.

1) BLINK SLOWLY TOWARDS A CAT
You will notice if you watch out for it carefully, that when you look at your cat, it may blink slowly and possibly then look away.
2) YAWNING WHEN LOOKING AT YOUR CAT
If an aggressive cat is staring-down another cat, you will never see it yawn.
By yawning in front of your cat, you are demonstrating your lack of threat.
Watch your catโs reaction when you do this. It will focus entirely on you as you do it. Combine this with a slow-blink and occasionally looking away.
As you yawn, close your eyes which will help your cause. Try not to make a loud noise like some people do when they yawn! Make it a nice silent one.
3) DON'T STARE โ Occasionally Look Away
Never stare at a cat thatโs feeling stressed and anxious. This feeds nicely into the last point actually. Look at them, yes, but donโt stare at them.
If the cat is looking at you, by all means, look at it back, but do occasionally look away. Again, keep everything really controlled and slow and make no sudden movements.
What this is demonstrating to your cat is that your focus is not directly on it. You are showing it that you are not considering attacking it and you arenโt particularly interested in bothering it.
4) LET THEM COME TO YOU
Donโt try and force the issue with a cat. Give them space and donโt crowd them. They will feel intimidated if they keep getting approached by people.
You will be able to do this eventually but not at the outset if they are very anxious. Always let a cat make the first move.
5) DON'T FOLLOW THEM
If cats donโt want to do something, donโt try and force them. Donโt pick them up and plonk them somewhere if you donโt think they want to be there.
6. REMAIN CALM
Cats can become nervous easily and although some are more nervous than others, generally they donโt feel comfortable with people who make a lot of noise.
7) BRIBE THEM WITH TREATS
Keep some treats handy and if youโre sitting nearby and the nervous cat doesnโt seem too keen on approaching, try enticing them with some treats.
Put some on the floor near them and if they seem interested and willing, try and get them to take one from your hands.
8) GIVE THEM SOMEWHERE TO GO
A nervous cat will want to be able to escape sometimes and climbing somewhere high is often appealing to them. Being up high and able to see whatโs going on below gives cats a sense of safety.
