Rabies in dogs and cats is a severe viral disease that affects the central nervous system.
In January 2024, DOH documented 7 cases of rabies which ended in a 100% fatality rate. This surge of Rabies incidents indicates a critical need for immediate action.
Rabies is transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, typically through bites.
There are two main types of rabies: furious rabies and paralytic rabies.
1. Furious Rabies: This type is characterized by aggressive behavior, agitation, and hyperactivity. Animals affected by furious rabies may become restless, irritable, and may exhibit unusual behavior such as biting or attacking objects or people.
2. Paralytic Rabies: Also known as dumb rabies, this type is marked by weakness, paralysis, and a lack of coordination. Animals with paralytic rabies may experience difficulty walking, swallowing, or breathing. This form of rabies progresses more slowly than furious rabies.
There is no specific treatment for rabies but it is preventable through vaccination and responsible pet ownership practices such as proper confinement and supervision. If you suspect your pet has been exposed to rabies, it's essential to seek veterinary care immediately.
