Here are some of the technical breed standards for Shih Tzu, as defined by the American Kennel Club (AKC):
General Appearance: The Shih Tzu is a sturdy, lively, and alert toy dog with a long flowing double coat. It has a distinctively arrogant carriage, with head well up and tail curved over the back.
Size, Proportion, Substance: The ideal Shih Tzu height at the withers is 9 to 10.5 inches (23-27 cm), and the weight should be between 9 and 16 pounds (4-7 kg). The breed should be compact, slightly longer than tall, and have substance and bone that are in proportion to its size.
Head: The Shih Tzu head is large, round, and wide, with a short, square muzzle, and large, dark, round, wide-set eyes. The nose is broad and black, and the ears are large, pendant, and heavily feathered.
Coat: The Shih Tzu has a long, flowing double coat that is dense, luxurious, and straight, with a good undercoat. The coat may be any color or combination of colors, but white on the forehead and tip of the tail is highly desirable.
Gait: The Shih Tzu should have a smooth, flowing gait, with good reach and drive, and a level topline.
Temperament: The Shih Tzu is an affectionate, friendly, and outgoing breed, with a playful, lively, and sometimes mischievous personality. It is loyal to its family, but may be reserved or aloof with strangers.
