Labrador Hallmarks

Dr. Michael Woods, (Canadian Kennel Club), "The essentials for type in the Labrador Retriever are compact outline; gentle expression; double coat (hard outer, dense under); otter tail; friendly, confident temperament. The head is wide, muzzle powerful; skull/muzzle about equal in length with parallel planes. Body is wide, deep, strong, short coupled, solid topline. "When judging this breed ask yourself, "Can this dog work all day in the worst kind of conditions?" This doesn't mean can it make a couple of mad "bat- out- of- hell" dashes to get a bird on dry land on a nice sunny day. But can it work in freezing water hour after hour and still come back wagging that otter tail. Oh! And did I mention "gentle expression"

Janis Grannemann (American Kennel Club). He is DOG. He is not fancy or breathtaking or anything special. He does not stand out in a crowd. He is not a piece of art. He is functional --plain and simple. He is built to work in varied conditions as a powerful athlete. Thus, all his parts must blend together -- no part overshadowing another. He is built like a canoe that can cut through the water or heavy brush and at the same time becoming a part of it. He doesn't float when he moves. He just gets there with the least amount of wasted motion using the least amount of energy. He is a gentle, fun-loving, outgoing friend that is up for anything at anytime. He just needs to be asked.

Judy Hunt (American Kennel Club). I would like to add that the eyes have an intelligent and gentle expression. The outline is compact, squarish, with the depth of body and length of leg approximately equal. Always remember that a Labrador is a happy, enthusiastic (not hyper) breed ready for whatever you wish to do, as long as it is with you. You always know when you're at the Labrador ring because of the wonderful wagging tails.
