Max, a 6-month old male Shihtzu was brought to our clinic for canine Heartworm prevention. Upon assessment of our vet, Max’s Heartworm prevention was delayed and he needed to undergo heartworm screening. Our vet opted Max to test for Canine Heartworm using an antigen rapid test kit which turned out positive.

Heartworm disease is a potentially fatal, but preventable, infection caused by a worm parasite, Dirofilaria immitis. The organism is transmitted by mosquitoes, which carry the heartworm larvae from an infected animal host to a new animal host.

The severity of a heartworm infection and the signs depend on the number of worms present, the immune response of the infected dog, the duration of infection, and the activity level of the animal.

Some dogs may not exhibit signs but the common signs of heartworm infection include coughing, exercise intolerance, failure to grow, labored breathing, a blue or purplish discoloration of the skin and gums, spitting up blood, fainting, nose bleeding, and the accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity.

From the diagnosis, Max started our treatment protocol for Canine Heartworm Infection two weeks ago and has been doing well since.

As of today, Max received a dose of Simparica Trio which is a monthly prevention for heartworm disease, kills adult fleas and is indicated for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations, the treatment and control of tick infestations, and the treatment and control of roundworm and hookworm infections in dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older.

We hope to see Max healthy and happy for his follow up check-up for the next month. We wish Max a fast recovery! 💗🐶
