USEFUL WAYS TO USE CHARCOAL IN POULTRY FARMS

🔷In the dust bath - charcoal or wood ash added to your chickens' dust bath helps to suffocate parasites such as mites, lice, fleas and ticks.

🔷 As a feed supplement - it has been observed that animals in the wild will gnaw on charred branches and stumps after a forest fire.

-Charcoal works as a laxative and detoxifier, flushing toxins out of the body.

- It will also help expel internal worms to some extent.

-Calcium is the most abundant element in wood ash, but it's also a good source of potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium.

-Adding wood ash to your chicken feed in a 1% ratio can improve lay rates, extend laying periods and will also reduce the smell of the chicken droppings.

- Ashes obtained from hardwoods like cedar, oak and maple have five times as many nutrients as softwoods like pine and balsa.

🔷As a wound healing agent - wood ash possesses antibacterial qualities which can prevent an open wound from becoming infected and also works to stop bleeding quickly, much like cornstarch, when applied topically to a wound.

-When ingested, the Vitamin K in the wood ash works to help blood clot and can reverse the effects of the coumadin in rat poison, for instance.

🔷To keep the coop clean - sprinkling wood ash on your coop floor can help reduce odors.

- Like baking soda, wood ash is alkaline and therefore will absorb and help neutralize bad smells. It will also help reduce the humidity levels in your coop.

🔷 To reduce the ammonia in your chickens' manure - adding charcoal in a ratio of 1-2% to your chicken feed can help prevent the creation of ammonia, leading to a more ammonia-free output from your chickens.

- Studies have found that it's effective in absorbing the ammonia and preventing fumes from forming.

🔷 To control impurities in the water - adding a chunk of charcoal to your waterer can help keep algae and other bacteria from forming and help absorb and filter out other impurities, while adding minerals to the water.

Interesting Facts Of Chicken Egg Fertility That You May Not Know.

✍It is possible to have a rooster and a hen that are active but a hen can still lay eggs that are not fertile:

✍I know you may be wondering how, and here is the explanation.
Unlike other birds where you find partners, in chickens there is no courtship or romance. A rooster just forces himself on the hen. So what happens is when a rooster mates a hen, his injected semen is stored in numerous s***m storage tubules (SSTs) located in the area where the hen’s uterus joins the va**na.

✍But this only happens provided the hen likes the rooster. If she doesn’t, she can release out the semen to avoid hatching his offspring. Therefore a hen may still proceed to lay eggs that are not fertile despite even mating with a rooster every day.

✍ Even if the hen approves the rooster, some eggs may still not be fertile:

✍Since the s***m is released shortly after an egg is laid, and each egg takes approximately 25 hours to develop, an egg produced on the day of mating will not be fertile.

✍An egg laid the next day may or may not be fertile, depending on the timing. An egg laid on the third day definitely should be fertile.

✍So as you can see your hen can still have the first two or three eggs that are not fertile despite the hen and a rooster having mated.

✍You don't need a rooster everyday for the hen to continue laying fertile eggs:

The amount of time during which the hen will continue to lay fertile eggs depends on how much s***m fills the SSTs, which are capable of storing semen from multiple matings and multiple roosters.

✍Highly productive hens generally remain fertile longer than hens that lay at a slower rate. The average duration of fertility from a single mating is 10 to 14 days.

✍So it is possible that once your hen has mated with a rooster you can even take the rooster away and you can still have fertile eggs for the next 14 days.

✍For first time layers if a rooster has mated with a hen, all her eggs are not always fertile:

✍Generally speaking, a hen who has mated will be fertile between 7 and 10 days after. It takes that long for the s***m to reach the oviduct where eggs are made.

✍So it is possible that after mating, your hen can still continue to lay eggs that are not fertile for the next 10 days. This is why it is encouraged that for hens that are laying for the first time it is better to eat the eggs for the first two or three weeks instead of attempting to hatch them.

Not all roosters have fertile s***m:
✍This is a sad one. Just like in humans, even in chickens we also have roosters that are infertile.

Seven (7) reasons why your hens are not laying eggs properly:

You might have observed one of the following scinerio in your hens.

- Hen refused to lay after 16 to 25 weeks or more.

- Sudden drop in egg production.

- Laying too small eggs, low quality eggs.

If you have observed such in your hens, here are the 7 possible reasons your chickens are not laying or stop Laying.

1. Low quality Feed:

The importance of quality feed, rich in essential feed ingredients in the right proportion can't be considered.

Poor quality feed will give you poor egg production. In some cases your hens might not lay at all.

Just make sure you get your feed from a reputable feed mill, or better still formulate your own feed.

Chicken feed is where your major expenses goes to, so you don't have to joke with it.

Negligence of quality feed can be very disastrous especially if you are into commercial egg production.

2. Molting Hen don't lay eggs:

Molting is a period of rest and rejuvenation for your hens.

During this period, they will experience a pattern of feather loss along with a cease in egg production.

It can occur at anytime, and it generally last about two months. (especially for local chickens)

So don't panic if your hens don't lay during this period ok.

3. Parasites:

Hen infested with external parasites (mite and lice) or internal parasites (worms) will stop laying.

Mite feed on blood and can cause anemia, while worms will cause a decline in nutrients absorption.

Ensure you follow your medication schedule to deworm regularly, and also use mite powder or spray when mites invade your hens.

Keep away potential parasites carriers like rodents, local Chickens, dogs, etc.

4. Weather Condition:

Extremely hot or cold weather can throw your hens off their laying schedule.

Try to adjust the temperature of your pen and chickens whenever the temperature goes extreme.

During hot whether, increase ventilation, give fresh cool water. You can add some ice cubes, serve them some fruit like water melon, pawpaw, etc.

During cold weather you can warm up your pen and increase light intensity.

5. A Broody Hen doesn't lay eggs:

When a hen goes broody she starts sitting on eggs to hatch them, but she stop laying more eggs.

This can also happen with hybrids like Isa brown, Bovans brown or Golden Comet in a litter system.

Although, if you remove the eggs they will stop Brooding because they are not created to hatch eggs.

They are poor sitters. They are suitable for commercial egg production.

This normally happens when you don't pick their eggs in the nest boxes.

But for good sitters like our backyard hens or local hens, once they go broody it will be difficult to break or stop them. They will stop laying entirely.

6. Not following your vaccination or Medications schedule:

Please vaccinate your chickens against major infections like Newcastle, Gumboro, Fowl pox, Marek, Coryza, etc. Failure to do this will affect your egg production and may lead to death.

7.Other reasons why your hen is not laying may include, old age, illness, trauma, seasonal laying, etc.
