Aquascaping often uses stones for decoration. However not all stones are created equally.

Know your stones with Aqua Lab PH! ft. Seiryu Stones

Seiryu Stones

Seiryu Stone just might be the most popular of aquascaping materials and is used worldwide for planted and hardscape aquariums.

But what is Seiryu Stone and why is it so popular? This guide covers everything you need to know about Seiryu stone and differentiate genuine seiryu from fake seiryu.

The word “Seiryu” comes from the Chinese Azure Dragon, a mythological constellation whose blue scales surely inspired the naming of this rock.

While Seiryu Stone has been popular in Japan for centuries it became popular when Takashi Amano introduced his Nature and Iwagumi aquascaping styles to the rest of the world.

Seiryu Stone has a bluish grey character that’s hard to find in rocks. Grey and white veins of calcite add focal points in an aquascape as does the jagged grain that invokes rocky outcroppings and mountain cliffs.

When used in aquarium aquascaping Seiryu provides a dramatic contrast to the vivid greens of live plants and punchy colors of fish that’s hard to match, especially under high powered aquarium lights.

A lot of the Seiryu Stone you see for sale outside of Japan is actually Ryuoh Stone. Rather than the delicate blue undertones of true Seiryu, Ryuoh is more of a slate to dull grey in color with less white marbling.
While still a nice rock and commonly used in Iwagumi and Nature Style aquascapes as an affordable alternative Ryuoh Stone really can’t compare to Seiryu.

Many try to sell their stones as “seiryu” but it is commonly just either black gravel or low grade marble stones! One easy way to tell if it is a Seiryu stone or Ryuoh stone is to try and smash the stone. If it breaks into many small pieces while also leaving behind sand and dust like particles, it is Seiryu! Otherwise it will break into smaller, edgy, compact pieces and the grain looks much smoother and does not offer much texture.

We hope this brief description of the Seiryu stone will help you in purchasing the right stone for you and help you in your Aquascaping journey. Beware of the fake “seiryu” stones as they can alter your water parameters and not offer the right look you imagined your tank to be.
