February 13 is Love Hornbills Day! Resharing a piece I made last year about the country’s hornbill species. 🪶🐦

Hornbills are tropical and subtropical birds from the family Bucerotidae, recognized for their long, curved bills, sometimes adorned with a casque.

One of the most remarkable traits of most hornbill species is their unique nesting behavior. When raising a chick, the female seals herself inside a tree cavity, leaving only a narrow slit open. Through this small opening, the male delivers food to his mate and their chick, ensuring their safety and nourishment. This extraordinary adaptation highlights the teamwork and dedication of hornbill parents.

The Philippines is home to several hornbill species, including the critically endangered Rufous-headed Hornbill and Sulu Hornbill, which play a vital role in forest ecosystems as seed dispersers. However, habitat loss and poaching have put many of these endemic species at risk, making conservation efforts crucial for their survival.

The Philippine eagle-owl is a vulnerable species of owl belonging to the family Strigidae. It is endemic to the Philippines, where it is found in lowland forests on the islands of Catanduanes, Samar, Bohol, Mindanao, Luzon, Leyte and possibly Sibuyan. The Philippine eagle-owl feeds on rodents and amphibians. Due to their reliance on living in large lowland forests, forest conservation is important in order to maintain populations of the Philippine eagle-owl, which is becoming increasingly vulnerable to going extinct. The Philippine eagle-owl was previously listed as endangered, but due to destruction of lowland habitat and possible hunting, the eagle-owl has since been adjusted to the vulnerability.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has warned the public about the illegal trade of wildlife, including the Philippine eagle-owl.

Republic Act (RA) 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001, prohibits the transport and trade of wildlife without the necessary permits and documentation.

The Palawan Bearcat, locally known as binturong or musang, is endemic to the islands of Palawan. It is a canopy-dwelling omnivore that feasts on fruits, shoots, insects, rodents, and birds found on the upper layer of their ecosystem.

But according to the Natural Resources Defense Council (2016), the increase in the island-dwelling population has led to the destruction of the bearcats' habitat, and binturongs are now vulnerable and in danger of extinction because they have nowhere else to go.

Due to heavy rain 1 falcon was rescued from BUCRUZ DAKO BARANGAY AYUNGON, LA CARLOTA CITY, and turned over to Mangkas Exotic It was identified as a (PEREGRINE FALCON) locally known as "Haring Ibon" in the Philippines. The Peregrine Falcon is a large, crow-sized cosmopolitan bird of prey renowned for its incredible speed, which can exceed 320 km/h during its characteristic hunting stoop.

Additionally, the Peregrine Falcon is a remarkable example of urban wildlife adaptation in many areas of its range. It often takes advantage of tall buildings for nesting and thrives in urban environments due to the abundance of prey such as pigeons and ducks.

5 young Visayan leopard cat was rescued from Barangay ARA-AL & RSB , LACARLOTA CITY and turned over to Mangkas Exotic.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature considers the Visayan leopard cat species as endangered. They can be found in the mountain ranges of Negros, Panay Islands.

DENR-CENRO has advised residents living in the upland areas to let these cats roam free around the wild.
