The United Nations General Assembly adopted on Thursday Resolution 76/300 declaring access to clean, healthy, and sustainable environment as a universal human right.

The Philippines is among the 161 nations which voted in favor of the resolution.

Climate Change Commission Secretary Robert E.A. Borje commended the adoption of the historic resolution citing its importance to developing countries like the Philippines, most vulnerable to triple planetary threats of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.

“It’s a clear articulation of the aspirations of all nations for what is right and just for all the peoples of the world - a clean, healthy and sustainable environment,” he said.

To do this, Secretary Borje pointed to the need to “build right at first sight," and anchor actions on principles of climate justice.

It's the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem! Some fast facts about the mangroves:

- Mangroves are trees or shrubs that are found along coastlines and intertidal zones. They have the unique ability to thrive in salty and brackish waters.

- Mangrove forests are home to birds, fishes, shrimps, and various aquatic species. They also host terrestrial species like lizards and snakes.

- Around 50% of the known mangrove species in the world can be found in the Philippines, with around 47 species of true and associate species of mangroves. This makes us among the top 15 mangrove-rich countries around the world.

- Around 66 out 82 provinces in the Philippines have mangroves. Some of the largest tracts of mangrove forests can be found along the coasts of Palawan, Sulu, and Quezon.

- Healthy mangrove forests provide immeasurable benefits to human communities, serving as spawning and nursery grounds for many fish species and mitigating disaster risks from the adverse effects of the climate crisis.
