Dear Hooman,

We never mentioned this: God sent us to you without our bright halos and glowing wings.

He said we’re on a secret mission, giving us a list of to-dos just for you—to wag our tails when you get home so you know how you are needed and valued, to ask for a belly rub so you can sit for a while and forget all your woes, to walk with you so you won’t have to feel alone, to lay on your lap and make you feel the warmth of love, to continue loving you even when everyone you care about is out of sight.

And the list goes on…

We promised to take care of you, not to fulfill our roles but to express love from the depths of our souls.

We promised to make you smile, even if it means going the extra mile.

We promised to protect you because you are our home, our comfort in this cruel world.

We promised to stay up to the very end, to love you until we breathe our last breath.

You were a resemblance to the paradise where we used to reside before our secret mission began. God was right, another angel without halo and wings will be waiting for us when we reach the Earth as tiny pups.

And we couldn’t thank you enough for all the love—hugs, kisses, belly rubs, and all the fun times we had!

So please don’t mourn for the rest of your life. Cry to ease the pain, be true to yourself when you want to grieve—but don’t forget how we want to see you smile every single day. We miss you a lot but we don’t want you here right now. Not yet—you still have a full life to live and we can still wait.

Please don’t blame yourself. Our fear and our pain that day might be the saddest and most frightful memories, but we are now healed so you better be alright, as well.

Don’t worry about us. We’re safe and warm in paradise. God is doing His parent duties now—and he promised to take care of us until your mission there is done and you can finally get up to reunite with us.

Until that day, we will watch you from behind the clouds.

We will cherish all our memories.

We will always look back—remember the taste of your yummy treats, the way you used to rub our tummies, the way you wanted us to call you daddy, the way you used to hug us tight and tuck us in bed at night, and the way we love each other with all our might.

You meant the world to us when we were still in your loving arms.

Now you mean the heavens—and we vow to welcome you here at heaven’s gate, right on the other side of the rainbow bridge.

Blissfully wagging our tails, we can finally say on that special day, “Look, our halos and wings are back again.”

By then, you will have your halo and wings, too.

And no one can ever break our hearts.
