Yesterday on the transport, we sent a total of 49 cats. It was a mix of boys and girls. 11 of the female cats were noted to be in heat by the vet. 🙀 It’s December and that is a shocking and terrifying thing to discover. One of the cats was a 5 month old kitten and she was in heat. Usually we are seeing a marked decrease in in heat and pregnant cats in December but when more than a third of the girls we sent were in heat, we might be in trouble. 😿

“Kitten season is the period when cats are most likely to mate and give birth, usually from March through October. The exact timing can vary by location.

Here are some reasons why kitten season occurs during the warmer months:
🕶️ Weather: Cats are more likely to mate and give birth when it's warm and the weather is less harsh.
🌞 Daylight: The increase in daylight hours in early spring triggers kitten season.
🍤 Food: Feral cats have better access to food sources during this time.

Here are some things you can do to help reduce the number of kittens:
✂️ Spay or neuter your cat
Spaying or neutering your cat can reduce unwanted behaviors and the risk of cancer.
👉🏼Ensure other cats are spayed or neutered.👉🏼
If you see or feed a neighborhood stray, make sure it's been spayed or neutered.
👉🏼Spay or neuter the parents of kittens you find
If you take a litter of kittens off the streets, don't forget to spay or neuter the mother and father.
