An 8 yr old female Shih tzu visited our clinic due to her right eye bulging out because she and another furbaby had a little misunderstanding. Proptosis (bulging of the eye out of its eye socket) is commonly caused by blunt trauma such as vehicular accidents or fighting with another furbaby.

Upon physical examination, the patient is in incredible pain, and the affected eye cannot be saved. Enucleation (surgical removal of the eye) was done due to the condition of the affected eye.

If you have any questions regarding your pet’s health, contact us at 09171598555 or 09171078501 and head down to R. Square Bldg., Gen. Luna St., Sabang, Lipa City (landmark: Liam’s Lomi House). 🌰 MACADAMIA NUTS

The toxic component within the macadamia nut is unknown, but even with small amounts of ingestion can lead to intoxication in a small to medium sized dog. Pancreatitis or inflammation of the pancreas may also be triggered by consumption of macadamia nuts because they are high in fat.

Early decontamination including induction of vomiting and activated charcoal administration to recover and prevent absorption of macadamia nuts are necessary. Dogs with more severe clinical signs may benefit from administration of IV fluids, analgesics, or antipyretics.

⚠️Warning: Highly contagious!

Zoonotic = can be transmitted from animals to humans

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by the bacteria called Leptospira spp. It is transmitted through contact with the urine of infected animals and contaminated soil or water.

The common clinical signs that can observed are fever, vomiting, inappetence, lethargy and jaundice. This can progress to kidney and/or liver failure and cause bleeding disorders such as blood-tinged vomit, bloody urine & f***s. Complications like fluid build up in the body e.g. legs, chest & abdomen are also present in some animals.

This is more prevalent during rainy season due to exposure to contaminated floodwater.

To prevent serious complications, routine Leptospirosis vaccination is recommended. Avoiding areas where wildlife, particularly rodents, are able to reach will also minimize the risk of infection.

🍬 XYLITOL

In dogs, xylitol stimulates a rapid, dose-dependent insulin release that can result in profound hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. Some dogs ingesting xylitol at high doses may develop severe liver insufficiency or failure.

Gastrointestinal decontamination of patients that remain clinically normal, monitoring blood glucose concentration and liver enzyme activity, IV administration of dextrose as needed, and management of hepatic insufficiency or failure if it develops are warranted for the treatment of xylitol toxicity.

🌱ONION, GARLIC, CHIVES, LEEKS

Absorption of sulfur-containing oxidant compounds from these vegetables (Allium spp.) results in oxidative damage to red blood cells, Heinz body formation, and methemoglobinemia which may lead to anemia. Cats are the most susceptible species, followed by dogs.

Treatment entails early gastrointestinal tract decontamination and management of acute hemolytic anemia.

🍫CHOCOLATE and ☕ CAFFEINE

Theobromine and caffeine are the components that trigger toxicosis in dogs and cats. These components competitively inhibit cellular adenosine receptors, resulting in nerve, spine and brain stimulation; urination; and rapid heart beat. Both theobromine and caffeine are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and then distributed throughout the body involving the liver for metabolism.

Gastrointestinal decontamination through induction of vomiting in patients that remain clinically normal; management of potentially life-threatening clinical signs and supportive care are warranted in chocolate and caffeine toxicosis

Case of the week: Sublingual Mucocele

Salivary mucocele also known as sialocele is an accumulation of saliva in the surrounding tissues due to a ruptured salivary gland or duct. The potential causes of this condition are bite wounds, chewing on sharp objects and usage of choke collars. Sialocele is categorized based on its location: cervical, zygomatic, sublingual and pharyngeal.

For this case, it is refered to as sublingual mucocele because it is located under the tongue. The animal had difficulties in chewing and swallowing caused by obstruction from the swollen area.

Surgery is the most effective treatment for this medical condition. Fluid drainage is rarely successful because it will likely recur within few weeks or months.

🍇GRAPES AND RAISINS

Ingestion of grapes and/or raisins has occasionally been associated with development of kidney failure in dogs. Affected dogs develop oliguric or anuric (inability to produce urine) renal failure, generally within 72 hours of ingesting these fruits. Unfortunately, there is no well-established cause as to why grapes/raisins trigger such problem.

Prompt gastrointestinal decontamination is the recommended treatment for raisin and/ grape toxicosis in patients that remain clinically normal.

FEATURED PET 😽

Hello! My name is Lunox! I might be named after a female mobile legends hero but I'm a cutie patootsie boy! I am a survivor of feline lower urinary tract disease plus a surgery patient due to my congenital phimosis. My doctors said that my putotoy can't get out because of the smol opening. Due to this, urinating was hellish before!

To stop the comeback of my disease, I underwent a surgery called preputioplasty. PREPUTIOPLASTY!? haha! my momma said it's just tuli. I was months old when I experienced this procedure but now I am glad to report that I just turned 1 year old this month! 🎉🎈🎉. Now, my favorite thing to do is to stay cute and to urinate in peace without difficulties. 😉 Thank you SBAH Lipa!

Soon I'll return for my wellness check- update my deworming, tick, flea and heartworm preventives. Also, won't forget about my vaccination boosters!

Does your furry friend have an infected or smelly wound? If so, it’s important to take them to the veterinarian for an examination as soon as possible. Keep your furbabies indoors to avoid flies from getting near them. This will help prevent them from having a condition called Myiasis.

Myiasis is an infestation of maggots that occurs when flies lay eggs on the skin. Once the eggs hatch, maggots can invade the skin, coat, or wounds. If left untreated, these wounds can deepen and become more severe.

If you have any questions regarding your pet’s health, contact us at 09171598555 or 09171078501 and head down to R. Square Bldg., Gen. Luna St., Sabang, Lipa City (landmark: Liam’s Lomi House). CASE OF THE WEEK: CONGENITAL PHIMOSIS IN CATS

A 4-month old male kitten was presented to the hospital with the chief complaint of difficulty in urination, lethargy and inappetence. Upon physical examination, the patient's urinary bladder was distended. Laboratory tests performed such as ultrasound, urinalysis, and CBC results all point to the diagnosis of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD).

Thorough physical examination of the pe**le area of the patient revealed that the preputial opening was narrow resulting in inability to extrude the p***s. Urinary catheter placement is warranted in this case, however, due to the congenital defect of the patient, catheter placement was challenging. After successfully placing the catheter, the patient was then confined until full recovery. However, a few days after discharge, the patient returned to the hospital because of the recurrence of the disease.

Clinical signs of congenital phimosis may vary from asymptomatic narrowing and in this case: complete occlusion of the preputial or***ce and/or urinary obstruction. The attending veterinarian later recommended to do corrective surgery of the narrow sheath to lower the chance of complications and recurrence of the disease. Fortunately, a week after the surgery, the patient recovered smoothly.
