Wether you hatch 5 chicks or 500 learning how to identify your chicks needs are key!
Below is a comparison of a dehydrated chick (left) and a healthy chick (right).
I use a auto watering cup system and the chick on the left just couldn’t figure out the cup equalled water. All the other chicks in the pen were fine but this little guy just couldn’t put two and two together. This can happen even with a regular waterer for any number of reasons.
When I check on chicks it is impossible to pick up every single chick and check them over. This is why I will observes them and look at their legs.
Chickens are great at masking problems until they are too late. The dehydrated chick acted just like all the healthy chicks and showed no signs of illness. By the time it would have shown signs of illness it probably wouldn’t have made it.
Learning how to see these subtleties in your birds will help maintain your flocks health from chicks to adults!
