There was a pet admitted yesterday in our clinic around 7:30am which is not our usual time for clinic hours but because it was an emergency we open our door to welcome the patient.

Checkay is a female mixed dog of Japanese Spitz having a high fever of 41.2°C with limbs paralysis, muscle spasm, salivation, head twitching, rapid breathing and listlessness. We had a hard time giving her fluids due to the stiffness of the four limbs so we immediately injected her anti inflammatory, antibiotics and Vitamin B complex plus Iron. Rolled around on her entire body with a cold towel, put an ice pad on the head ,we lay her comfortably on the table and pray for her healing after that we told the parents to observe the effect of medicine that we gave and be positive for the result. After 1 hour try to check her body temperature it was now at 39.8'C. The parents were crying feeling to loose their beloved fur pet but we us vet just do our best to make our patient back for good condition and live a normal life. As we continue to observe the patient we interviewed the history of the dog. We found out she has five puppies nursing on her and she sometimes went outside and had a fight to other dogs.

Another 30mins had passed Checkay was no longer in paralysis she was able to stand on her own and able to drink plenty of cold water and move normally. She can flex her legs already then check again the body temp and it was at 38.7°C meaning its normal already. We send her home gave medical care advices for home meds and instructed the proper nutrition to give.

What is hypocalcemia?
This is a low level of Calcium in the body due to heavy milk production during the nursing period of a female pet. Signs are usually loss of appetite ,weakness, muscle twitching, listlessness and in severe cases may lead to seizure or convulsion this is also a fatal condition.

This is a great opportunity to educate our fur parent to give a proper management to our nursing pets. Make sure to give supplements ,proper nutrition and to provide a proper shelter to lay for the pets and puppies .Always ask your vet what is the proper management to give for pregnant until nursing stage so that illnesses like this will be prevented.
