Northern Vet Animal Clinic

Northern Vet Animal Clinic We are a diagnostics and treatment specializing companion animal clinic, located in Manaoag Once the pet is sold, it is no longer their problem.

The founders of Northern Vet Animal Clinic has always been animal lovers at heart, and veterinarians second. As pet lovers, they feel glad and at home as Pangasinan embraces pet ownership, as Veterinarians they feel very concerned; unfortunately, "quality, affordable veterinary healthcare" and "responsible and informed pet ownership" has not caught on in general in Pangasinan.

-Accesibility to pe

t clinics is somewhat poor, with many towns such as Manaoag, Mapandan, Mangaldan, San Jacinto, Pozurrubio, San Fabian, Binalonan, San Manuel not having their own animal clinics. People from around these areas would often travel great distances to seek veterinary care, to locations as far as NCR, where reputable hospitals exist.
-Quality pet care is hindered due to old, outdated care practices, substandard diagnoses, lack of proper veterinary equipment, and so on.
-Pangasinan for the longest time has been ranking on or near the top of the list of Philippine provinces with the highest number of cases of rabies, also considered as true for other common dog/cat diseases. The main reason for this is the prevalence of unvaccinated, unneutered, stray dogs and cats.
-Affordability is a question, being that Veterinary Medicine is a small practice in general, and that services has to go through a lot of hoops and bloats to be delivered to the masses.
-Many owners are ill/insufficiently informed about pet ownership. A classic example of this is the rising case of puppies dying of Parvovirus, a disease that can be easily prevented but still kills because puppies are unvaccinated at their proper age.
-Non-reputable breeders, much like NCR's Cartimar or Tiendesitas, only look to make a quick buck and won't care about animal wellness. All of the abovementioned factors are a hindrance, or are slowly killing the blossoming pet ownership industry in Pangasinan. As animal advocates, we see it as our calling and moral responsibility to address the issues, elevate the level of care, and be the well informer for our pet owners.

-We situated our clinic in Manaoag, in the smack center where no other vet clinics reside. This should ease accesibility issues for the are including nearby towns Mapandan, Mangaldan, Binalonan, San Jacinto, Pozurrubio, and so on.
-Our doctors have years upon years of veterinary experience coming from the elite animal hospitals of Makati, to the fields and farms of Pangasinan. This combination ensures we get the right calls for any situation.
-We look to invest in more state of the art equipment, to complement our top level software and IT. This will ensure we deliver efficient, on point service, which does not compromise.
-As we establish our network, we look to partnering with local organizations to vaccination drives, spay/neuter drives, and ownership awareness to our owners.
-If there's a cheaper, effective way to do things, we will advise that-- but not in the name of effectivity and efficiency. We also ensure to engage only with reputable and as much as possible, direct suppliers so we don't have to deal with bloated profit cuts. To cut our story short, our bottom line is that low cost, top level vetcare standards should not be an exclusive right for elite pet owners. We imagine a time where anyone can have a pet, not worrying that they are not well informed, that they have no one to turn on to in case they need help. This is our goal, our vision that we work towards to achieve.

Yes, that's us, a decade ago. Yes, that dog has no snout.😱 She is the KABANG, a proud . As we celebrate , we would like to share her story.

It was December 2011. In Zamboanga, two girls were playing on the roadside and were in the way of a sp*eding motorcycle. They would have been run over for sure, but a dog ran off and knocked the motorcycle, saving the two girls. People who came in rescue found her still attached to the motorcycle by her snout, which at this time was already crushed by the injury. She was pulled off successfully, but she ran off to somewhere. As for the people involved, they were unharmed except for some minor bruises.

About two weeks have passed. Kabang returned home, and the vet hospital where Doc Maan was working at the time had the unique privilege to fly to Zamboanga to see Kabang up close, to assess and treat her injuries.

Miraculously, her mouth area was not as infected. It was raw in some places, but given the circumstance, she looked better than expected. She had actually well-adjusted to her injury, finding ways to eat and drink despite her missing snout. At this point, her heroics and resilience have catapulted her stories viral in news and social media outlets.

Efforts to restore her snout have emerged, but with her families' limited means and the complexity of the surgeries required, the treatment was not feasible. This prompted her followers to pitch in and run fundraisers. Backed from donations from 47 countries, these raisers succeeded, and Kabang was flew to the US, where her surgery was performed by UC Davis Veterinary Hospital in California.

Her surgery was a success, and she returned home in June 2013. The surgery did not fix her aesthetic but helped preserve mouth utility and prevent other complications from occurring. She was given hero's welcome on her hometown in Zamboanga upon her arrival.

After living a fulfilled life, Kabang died on her sleep on May 2021 at the age of 13. A statue in Pasonaca, Zamboanga was built and inaugurated on her honor - A way for the people touched by her stories of selflessness, heroism, and spirit, to remember her.

Doc, for sale po sila? Magkano po? 100 million!!💵

We get this question sometimes from clients who can't help but be in awe of Zee and Dee's cuteness, sass, fluff and blub. 😆 Yes blub, especially Zee, who always get mistaken to be PREGNANT, because of his big bilbil.😅

To us, aside from being a , a muse and a squeak toy, Zee and Dee are a proof of concept - That one's pet does not need to have a breed, does not need to be expensive to be cute or gorgeous. A healthy pet GLOWS, and can look so much better than a pet that isn't healthy.

That said, a follow up question we get is "Doc, gusto ko din ng ganyan ka cute, paano po??"... our short answer wound always be, "Mag adopt ka, tapos alagaan mong mabuti!!" 🥰

If can, adopt and don't shop! I mean, just look at how fugly and malnourished they were when they were still homeless?? 🙃🙃

Did you know, making "tiris" of garapata is like cesarean section - sure, mama Gertrude dies, BUT IT HATCHES ALL THE EGGS, NO CAP!😱😱🤮

What is/was your proven method of slaying ticks?? Flex it at us, we'll let you know if it's bet or sus! 🤣

TADAAA!! 🤢🤢😨

Does your dog:

💩 Smell like stinky, expired fish no matter how many times they take a bath?

💩 Scoot and drag their butts on the floor?

💩 Display irritability when approached from their behind?

💩 Have a weird lump near their butt hole, which they repeatedly lick or bite?

It might be that your dog's a**l gland is clogged! You see, this gland produces the oils that the dogs use to "identify" each other, which is why the dogs smell each other's butts.

Normally, this gland drains excess oils when the dogs p**p, but sometimes this isn't the case and the a**l gland becomes clogged, filling up with the stinky oils. This can be itchy to very painful for the dog, which is why they become irritable, licking, biting and rubbing their butts in the ground, grass, tiles, even your bed.

As you can imagine, this does NOT smell good, like a concentrated, rotten bagoong extract.💀 What's worse is that when it gets to your skin, sorry.. Be prepared for at least a few hours of giggles and side comments from your seatmates or coworkers, because the odor persists even after rigorous soap washing. 😆

FINE, stinky, but will the dogs be OK? Yes, as most of the time all that's needed is for the a**l gland to be drained. This is easily done within the clinic, and is a standard procedure for all the grooming packages we offer. For repeat or severe cases, antibiotics, pain management, and a temporary diet change may be recommended.

TADAAA!!

‼️Sensitive video ahead‼️

👀LOOK: Doc inserts a catheter up our patient's urethra, to relieve his bladder and facilitate urination. Our patient suffers from urethral blockage, secondary to feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC).

💉Urethral blockage is a very painful condition where the patient (usually males) is having difficulty or totally unable to urinate. This is a medical emergency, because urine trapped in the bladder can quickly escalate to kidney failure, bursting of the bladder, or peritonitis, all of which are fatal to the patient. It can be caused by a number of urinary tract diseases such as UTI, bladder inflammation (FIC), bladder stones, cancer or kidney injury.

For dog or cat owners at home, urinary blockage may be suspected if you observe your pet straining without p*e output, p*eing for longer than usual, p*eing more frequently, or when they can p*e, but the output is trickling and not a continuous line; These are usually accompanied by a tense/bloated abdomen, decreased appetite and reduced activity and socialization. Some patients also vocalize while p*eing, as they experience pain from straining.

When blockage is suspected, it is imperative that your pet be brought to a vet clinic to relieve it. Depending on presentation, your doctor may insert a catheter (as is shown above), remove urine and/or stones directly from the bladder, or a surgical removal of the p***s to allow a wider exit for bladder contents (pe**le urethrostomy). Lab tests are also usually recommended to identify and cure the root cause of the block.

Once the blockage is fixed and its root cause cured, your vet doctor may provide suggestions on how to prevent blockages in the future. This may include diet changes, stress and litterbox management, among others. 👩‍⚕️

Look at me, I am Nick Furry! 🥴

Our patient here recently went through enucleation, or in other words surgical removal of the eyeball. For many pet owners, this procedure can be unnerving; for some, outright extreme or egregious. However, enucleation still remains a viable option for many pets with eye problems. Here are 4 reasons why...

👁 Physical trauma: For dogs that have been in a bad dogfight or accident, their eye may be cut so badly that keeping the eyeball presents fatal risks such as bleeding or deep infection. A damaged eye may no longer be operable, and enucleation can be performed to remove the eye and the risks of keeping it.

👁 Cancer/Tumors: Tumors can also grow on eyeballs or surrounding areas. In some cases, these tumors are either so large that they damage the eyeball, or suspected to be cancerous, meaning they can metastasize and spread to other parts of body. Enucleation may be the best or only option not only for quality, but to save the patient's life.

👁 Diseases like diabetes or obesity can cause high blood pressure, which in turn causes high intra-ocular pressure (IOP), also known as glaucoma. In severe glaucoma cases, enucleation may be considered to free the patient from intense pain, therefore improving quality of life.

👁 Anatomical abnormalities within the eye may cause its fluid drain to be blocked, causing eyes to swell and pop out, prompting pain and glaucoma. Breeds such as Shih Tzus, Chows, Boston Terries are at more risk than others; Depending on severity, risk of proptosis and other factors, enucleation may be suggested to eliminate suffering and improve the patient's quality of life.

Did you see a recurring theme here? In addition to health risks, pain and quality of life are the major considerations by doctors when performing enucleation on your pet. While many find the loss of eyeballs icky and aesthetically unappealing, if it frees your pet from risk of dying or debilitation, sleepless nights, lost appetite and energy to play, they will absolutely thank you for it in the long run.

What's your position on enucleation? Let us know and we may be able to add insight. 🙂

Uyy, pwede na taniman ng kamote! 😅 Here are five things you probably didn't know about dirty ears and earmites.🦀

1️⃣ It is not wise to use cotton buds to clean our pets' ears, for the simple reason that we can't tell them to keep still, or else we injure their eardrum by accident. A small gauze or cotton ball will suffice, only up to what we can reach with our fingers. Ear cleaning solutions are readily available in most vet clinics.

2️⃣ Excessive cleaning of your pet's ears is detrimental, for it may accelerate the rate of which they become dirty. This is because excess cleaning can damage delicate tissues and strip the inner ear of its natural oils. This prompts the body to produce more oily discharge than needed, and this discharge is what collects dust and debris which then becomes the dark, soil-like discharge we see.

3️⃣ Dark discharge does not always simply mean dirty ears. When your pet's ear is when it is accompanied by itching, soreness, head shaking, and hair loss around the ears, your pet may have an ear infection (otitis) and may need medical attention.

4️⃣ Ear infections in dogs and cats can have many causes. One of the more common causes are earmites (Otodectes cynotis), a highly contagious and very itchy external parasite which likes to live in ears of dogs, cats, rabbits, and other mammals. These earmites are easily passed via skin to skin contact, and can trigger severe crusting, itching and other ear infection symptoms when not attended to.

5️⃣ For treatment of ear infections, your veterinarian will rule out possible causes, usually starting by ruling out earmites since it is common and is relatively simple to treat. Treatment almost always include cleaning, treatment for the root cause, possibly antibiotics and pain medication.

As always, your vet can always share his or her 2 cents when you have questions. The more you know!

We are proud of this, and shall continue to serve urban-class, high-quality veterinary products and services to our rural community.

As part of our vision, to continuously provide our clients effective, quality products that we have grown accustomed to, we also need to keep up with the pricing fluctuations that happen from time to time.

Due to price increases implemented at the distribution level, we will be implementing price changes on several products on our catalog. These include, but are not limited to:

• Boehringer (Nexgard, Spectra. etc.)
• Zoetis (Simparica, Trio, etc.)
• Pet food products (Pedigree, Topbreed kibbles)

Dear Doctor,

We are most grateful for the time you spent with us, expertise you lent us. At a time when we were already in the groove, you showed us that we can still do better.

You showed us that even in difficult cases, hope can still be found as long as we keep our attention to details.

You showed us that sometimes, the better course of action is to just do, rather than just wait and see.

You believed in our ability to mentor you, and the level of progress you have shown makes us think that we are actually doing well.

Your younger, go-getter, adventure oriented mindset is a refreshing shift for us, who rarely explore outside our usual experiences.

You gave us an alternate lens on which we can see an alternate worldview, and this has helped us be more flexible on situations where we would find ourselves stiff.

Your passion for the work you do pushed us to be better, to do more.

On your new endeavor, we only wish you the best of luck, and further success; we know you have what it takes perform, excel and be succeessful on your new career path.

Cheers and Bon Voyage, Dr. Jejirah Bumanghat!!

Furmoms and dads out there - Have you experienced a situation where your puppies/litter wound seemingly just die out of nowhere? Let's talk about Puppy Fading Syndrome, why it happens, and how to prevent/manage it.

Puppy fading syndrome is a generic term for puppies that deteriorate after birth. Symptoms include low weight (runt of the litter), refusal to suckle, inability to cry, lethargy, and scruffy or messy appearance. When these symptoms show up, the survival odds of the puppy is already low, even with medical attention.

The causes of fading also vary. It could be environmental, when their place is too hot or too cold, too wet or dry. It could be because of the mother's poor nursing instincts. Could be an illness the mother dog is passing to her pups through her milk. Could be due to malnutrition, or lack of food supply. It could be the slightest presence of ants, ticks, or fleas on their nest.

In short, fading happens because of the puppie's extreme fragility on their first few weeks after they are born. They cannot regulate body heat, their immune systems cannot fight infections, they can't digest anything but infant milk, they can't groom and repel parasites, they can't forage for their own food.

These conditions which are "inconvenient" at best for older dogs are actually life threatening for puppies. This perspective highlights our need to be attentive to details when it comes to newborn puppies. What can we do to manage or prevent it?

-For newborn pups, it is recommended they suckle immediately after birth, so they can get colostrum from their mother. This is done regardless if the plan after is bottle or breastfeeding.

-Warm lamp is a big help in regulating ambient temperature, especially if the mother is not very attentive when nursing the puppies.

-If puppies are manually fed infant milk, intervals of 2-3 hours between feeding is ideal.

-The mother dog should also be apparently healthy, free of diseases since most of these can be passed to the puppies via milk, including worms.

-Your vet can also help to assess and correct the common conditions which causes fading. They can also navigate through alternative treatments, since most medications are off limits for lactating and newborn dogs.
