TADAAA!! 🤢🤢😨
Does your dog:
💩 Smell like stinky, expired fish no matter how many times they take a bath?
💩 Scoot and drag their butts on the floor?
💩 Display irritability when approached from their behind?
💩 Have a weird lump near their butt hole, which they repeatedly lick or bite?
It might be that your dog's anal gland is clogged! You see, this gland produces the oils that the dogs use to "identify" each other, which is why the dogs smell each other's butts.
Normally, this gland drains excess oils when the dogs poop, but sometimes this isn't the case and the anal gland becomes clogged, filling up with the stinky oils. This can be itchy to very painful for the dog, which is why they become irritable, licking, biting and rubbing their butts in the ground, grass, tiles, even your bed.
As you can imagine, this does NOT smell good, like a concentrated, rotten bagoong extract.💀 What's worse is that when it gets to your skin, sorry.. Be prepared for at least a few hours of giggles and side comments from your seatmates or coworkers, because the odor persists even after rigorous soap washing. 😆
FINE, stinky, but will the dogs be OK? Yes, as most of the time all that's needed is for the anal gland to be drained. This is easily done within the clinic, and is a standard procedure for all the grooming packages we offer. For repeat or severe cases, antibiotics, pain management, and a temporary diet change may be recommended.
TADAAA!!

👀LOOK: Doc inserts a catheter up our patient's urethra, to relieve his bladder and facilitate urination. Our patient suffers from urethral blockage, secondary to feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC).
💉Urethral blockage is a very painful condition where the patient (usually males) is having difficulty or totally unable to urinate. This is a medical emergency, because urine trapped in the bladder can quickly escalate to kidney failure, bursting of the bladder, or peritonitis, all of which are fatal to the patient. It can be caused by a number of urinary tract diseases such as UTI, bladder inflammation (FIC), bladder stones, cancer or kidney injury.
For dog or cat owners at home, urinary blockage may be suspected if you observe your pet straining without pee output, peeing for longer than usual, peeing more frequently, or when they can pee, but the output is trickling and not a continuous line; These are usually accompanied by a tense/bloated abdomen, decreased appetite and reduced activity and socialization. Some patients also vocalize while peeing, as they experience pain from straining.
When blockage is suspected, it is imperative that your pet be brought to a vet clinic to relieve it. Depending on presentation, your doctor may insert a catheter (as is shown above), remove urine and/or stones directly from the bladder, or a surgical removal of the pen*s to allow a wider exit for bladder contents (penile urethrostomy). Lab tests are also usually recommended to identify and cure the root cause of the block.
Once the blockage is fixed and its root cause cured, your vet doctor may provide suggestions on how to prevent blockages in the future. This may include diet changes, stress and litterbox management, among others. 👩⚕️

Uyy, pwede na taniman ng kamote! 😅 Here are five things you probably didn't know about dirty ears and earmites.🦀
1️⃣ It is not wise to use cotton buds to clean our pets' ears, for the simple reason that we can't tell them to keep still, or else we injure their eardrum by accident. A small gauze or cotton ball will suffice, only up to what we can reach with our fingers. Ear cleaning solutions are readily available in most vet clinics.
2️⃣ Excessive cleaning of your pet's ears is detrimental, for it may accelerate the rate of which they become dirty. This is because excess cleaning can damage delicate tissues and strip the inner ear of its natural oils. This prompts the body to produce more oily discharge than needed, and this discharge is what collects dust and debris which then becomes the dark, soil-like discharge we see.
3️⃣ Dark discharge does not always simply mean dirty ears. When your pet's ear is when it is accompanied by itching, soreness, head shaking, and hair loss around the ears, your pet may have an ear infection (otitis) and may need medical attention.
4️⃣ Ear infections in dogs and cats can have many causes. One of the more common causes are earmites (Otodectes cynotis), a highly contagious and very itchy external parasite which likes to live in ears of dogs, cats, rabbits, and other mammals. These earmites are easily passed via skin to skin contact, and can trigger severe crusting, itching and other ear infection symptoms when not attended to.
5️⃣ For treatment of ear infections, your veterinarian will rule out possible causes, usually starting by ruling out earmites since it is common and is relatively simple to treat. Treatment almost always include cleaning, treatment for the root cause, possibly antibiotics and pain medication.
As always, your vet can always share his or her 2 cents when you have questions. The more you know!

Furmoms and dads out there - Have you experienced a situation where your puppies/litter wound seemingly just die out of nowhere? Let's talk about Puppy Fading Syndrome, why it happens, and how to prevent/manage it. #themoreyouknow
Puppy fading syndrome is a generic term for puppies that deteriorate after birth. Symptoms include low weight (runt of the litter), refusal to suckle, inability to cry, lethargy, and scruffy or messy appearance. When these symptoms show up, the survival odds of the puppy is already low, even with medical attention.
The causes of fading also vary. It could be environmental, when their place is too hot or too cold, too wet or dry. It could be because of the mother's poor nursing instincts. Could be an illness the mother dog is passing to her pups through her milk. Could be due to malnutrition, or lack of food supply. It could be the slightest presence of ants, ticks, or fleas on their nest.
In short, fading happens because of the puppie's extreme fragility on their first few weeks after they are born. They cannot regulate body heat, their immune systems cannot fight infections, they can't digest anything but infant milk, they can't groom and repel parasites, they can't forage for their own food.
These conditions which are "inconvenient" at best for older dogs are actually life threatening for puppies. This perspective highlights our need to be attentive to details when it comes to newborn puppies. What can we do to manage or prevent it?
-For newborn pups, it is recommended they suckle immediately after birth, so they can get colostrum from their mother. This is done regardless if the plan after is bottle or breastfeeding.
-Warm lamp is a big help in regulating ambient temperature, especially if the mother is not very attentive when nursing the puppies.
-If puppies are manually fed infant milk, intervals of 2-3 hours between feeding is ideal.
-The mother dog should also be apparently healthy, free of diseases since most of these can

👀🦁LOOK: Diggie, a post-surgery patient undergoing laser therapy.
Photobiomodulation, or otherwise known as cold laser therapy, is a painless, non-invasive procedure performed to improve recovery from tissue injuries such as wounds, inflammation, sprains, and so on. For chronic conditions such as arthritis, regular laser therapy in conjunction with traditional meds can significantly improve the quality of life for the patient, by reducing the overall pain score of the said condition.
Laser therapy acts by improving the blood flow on the target area, as well as stimulating the regenerative mechanisms of the cells. It is an adjunct therapy, meaning it is utilized best in conjunction with other treatment modalities.
Laser theraphy is available in our clinic, via walk-in or appointment, as sole procedure or bundled with other veterinary services.

‼️‼️Be careful when putting your dogs in ponytails!‼️‼️
Hair clips and elastics are certainly a great help in managing our pet's unruly hair, but these should be used with care and caution.
A common case we get is when the patient suddenly gets their ear tips "sliced", when these skin flaps get caught up with all the hair in the rubber band. This happens without any bloodspill or reaction from the patient. 😱 Unsuspecting owners would often get shocked, seeing their pets ears fall off. 😐😐
When the eartips get caught up on a rubber band, the blood supply to this area immediately gets cut off, numbing the area completely. Given enough time, this part will become necrotic and fall off. 🥺
A similar mechanism sometimes happen to long haired dogs, where their nipples get tangled up in the hair matting, causing the nipples to get sliced if not completely severed.
Depending on the situation, most fixes can be as simple as cleaning the wound of any hair and debris, while some cases can require a basic round of antibiotics and/or pain medications. Unfortunately, the severed part can no longer be returned, as the tissues in it will already be dead/necrotic.
The more you know! Ingat!
They say Chihuahuas rank very high on the biting aggression list. 😅
This is actually somewhat true. 😊 As Doc Maan explains, it is usual for Chihuahuas to be home dogs, always hand carried by their owners. Why is this significant?
This added elevation from the ground due to hand carrying meant that Chihuahuas think they are "taller" that other dogs walking around, even if this is not the case. Add that to the usual dog behavior of being protective/aggressive when their person is around, pass the behavior to scores of younger generations, and voila - an aggressive default behavior!
Of course, this is a general notion, and not all Chihuahuas (or MiniPinschers for this matter) are born aggressive. But for those that are, there will always be means to curb negative behavior. 😊
Advise#1: DO NOT COPY what was done in the vid. Not only will it get you bitten, but it can also reinforce aggression. 😅

Many people are overwhelmed with the things to do to maintain their dog's oral health, but there are simple ways!
✅️Dry kibbles or treats that need chewing such as Dentastix can help clear loose plaque and tartar.
✅️Pet approved toothpaste (without xylitol or flouride) can be applied with gauze or dog toothbrush to manage the mouth smell and bacteria.
✅️Balanced diet with sources of calcium such as milk can help maintain teeth health.
For severe cases of plaque, your vet can always help out with the steel brushy brush (AKA dental scaler).

Breaktime! During confinement cases, we believe that the little things can also make a difference. 😊
When a patient is able bodied, going outside for a quick walk and nature break seem too extra, but it can actually improve recovery. But how so?
Walking can reduce muscle weakening that is inherent when prescribed long resting periods. For anxious patients, it may be uncomfortable for them to wee or poop in their cages, but are okay when doing it outside.
The patient may also form a bond with the staff during walking, making it easier to manage routine parts of confinement. Also, lastly: Vitamin D = always good! 😁

Hiro, a 7-year old shih tzu had his bladder incised through his abdomen, to retrieve stones that are blocking his peeing. This is called a canine cystotomy, performed under general gas anesthesia.
When stones form, it can cause life threatening blockage since the patient will be unable to urinate, causing buildup of urine in the bladder. When prolonged, this condition could cause the bladder to rupture, and kidneys to fail.
In Hiro's case, he already underwent urethrostomy and cystotomy years prior, to widen his urine path and reduce the possibility of blockage. While the procedures worked very well, he unfortunately developed new stones. This did not cause complete blockage, though imagine an uncontrolled case of "balisawsaw"; where urinating is hard, painful, frequent, and blood tinged.
From first incision to last stitch, we took about 55 minutes to extract all of the stones from the bladder. After the successful procedure, Hiro is recovering well, and should now have less worries about urinating.
Good job, Hiro! See you on your follow up!

Why do they do this??

Cats vocalize for a number of reasons. "Meow" is their way to interact with humans, although honestly, we don't understand them, until they start doing gestures. 😂😂 Notice also, when cats "talk" to each other, they don't meow, but rather just do eye to eye contact. 🙂
Cats have other kinds of vocalizations that they use for other cats. Hissing relays bad mood and to back off, Growling for engaging in fights, low-tone moaning for courting and "proliferation".
