* Chocolate - It can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, agitation, increased thirst, elevated heart rate, and in severe cases, seizure. Dark and unsweetened are the most dangerous, while milk chocolate contains lower toxin levels.

* Xylitol Sweetener - It can cause severe liver damage and potentially fatal liver failure.

* Costume/Glow Sticks - Do not dye/color to your pet’s fur even if labeled non-toxic. Glow stick contain the chemical dibutyl phthalate (DBP). If consumed, symptoms include drooling, pawing at the mouth, agitation/irritation and vomiting.

* Lit Candles/Lanterns - Never leave burning candles unattended for any reason.

* Halloween Decoration- Chewed cords can cause life threatening electrical shock or burn. Batteries can cause chemical burns or GI blockage if consumed. Glass/plastic shards can also lead to lacerations within the esophagus ang GI tract.

Atopic dermatitis is one of the most common skin diseases in dogs. It is characterized by itching and redness of skin, face, ears, paws and rear ends. Dogs are often seen scratching their ears, licking their paws, and sometimes rubbing their butt to the ground.

With atopic dermatitis (atopy), the dog’s immune system overreacts to any ‘allergens’ that gains entry to the skin due to a defective skin barrier. An allergen is anything that can start off an abnormal immune reaction which manifests as itching and redness of skin. Allergens include fleas, mites, dusts, pollens, grass, skin bacteria or yeast, and certain dietary ingredients.

Atopy can negatively impact a dog’s quality of life. The good news is it can be successfully managed by working with your veterinarian.

So if you happen to observe your pet with the above mentioned signs, listen to your beloved pooch and schedule an appointment with your trusted veterinarian.
