The biggest myth about FIP ​​is that it is a directly contagious disease. The virus that causes FIP disease is FCoV. This virus is usually found in the intestines of cats and causes an infection with mostly mild symptoms. However, in some cases, the virus mutates into the FIP virus and affects the cat's immune system, causing serious health problems.

The exact trigger of the mutation that causes the change is still unknown. General observations show that low immunity resulting from stress, neutering and poor living conditions can cause the onset of mutation.

Caused by Coronavirus (FCoV) in Cats: FIP is caused by a mutation of the Feline Coronavirus (FCoV). While FCoV is usually harmless, it can mutate into the more dangerous FIP virus.

Not Transmitted to Other Cats: Unlike FCoV, the mutated FIP virus is not contagious. Cats with FIP are not at risk of infecting other cats.

Curable with FIP Eradication: FIP eradication, using the antiviral drug GS-441524, has shown promising results in curing FIP.

Clinical Symptoms: Fever, lethargy, reduced appetite, and drinking are common symptoms. Other signs may include jaundice, breathing difficulties, and neurological problems.

High Mortality Rate: FIP has a very high mortality rate of about 96%. Early detection and treatment are crucial to increase the chances of survival.
